Really good!

I’ve tried a few different language apps, for Mandarin and also other languages (while I was deciding which language I’d like to learn 🙂) and this is the best. You get so much free content, and the content is really good! I find it very helpful hearing the words/phrases spoken by real people, and it’s even better that they’re delivered in video form rather than just audio. It seems to help it stick in my head better when I have something like “wǒ bù xǐhuān miànbāo” being said out loud while the speaker also shows some bread and makes “no” gestures for example, lol. The videos are often quite cute and it’s nice having that human element.

There are also games, which are fun as well as educational, and little stories. It teaches how to write hanzi (Chinese characters) too, showing you the order of strokes and getting you to repeat it. I use this app alongside Duolingo, but for me Duo is more for the social aspect and doing a quick lesson here or there. When I want to properly study Chinese, this is the app I go to. The only thing I can think of to add would maybe be mini lessons, like if you don’t have time to complete a full length lesson but don’t want to skip it altogether. Or an option to save lesson progress so you can return to it later. But overall, this app is amazing. Please keep all the free content free and never take this app off the market 😅💗

Developer Response ,

We're grateful for your comment and happy to hear that our app has been useful for you. Our courses are created by a team of experienced Chinese teachers who are dedicated to helping students succeed.

As for the mini lessons, we are developing a new course that is made of shorter lessons (but with the same or even more effectiveness comparing to current lessons.) Stay tuned!

We're glad to see that our efforts are paying off, and we wish you all the best in your Chinese language learning journey!

Best beginner app for learning Chinese

Had a paid subscription for 3 years now and I’ve use it almost every day

Hello Chinese has continually improved its offering and the addition of stories recently gets two thumbs up from me. I think stories are one of the best ways to learn a language, and HC sets the stories at an appropriate level using the vocabulary and grammar you learn in the app.

One suggestion on the stories: add more questions. Why just add 2 questions for the stories? And give more points. The stories are challenging. I have to read each one over twice and highlight unfamiliar idiomatic language

There is also one bug best I have with the app however. One common review feature is making sentences using words given: the words are in blocks and you have to put them in the right order. The problem is you can’t drag and swap them around.

So if you’ve made a sentence with 10 words and you see the first block is incorrect you have to tap all the blocks back to their starting point and start again. This is probably my biggest annoyance with the app

Lastly it would be great to see some more lessons beyond HSK3 point as I finished the main course a long time ago and would like to learn new vocabulary and grammar

Thank you so much for your suggestions, Rhys1929!
About the story questions, we focus more on quality instead of quantity, since the purpose of questions are helping you to confirm if you fully understood the stories. Normally 2-3 questions are enough to cover the plot.
We don't currently support dragging the blocks, but we will consider making it happen in the future. I fully understand how you feel when you need to delete most of entered blocks and re-enter from scratch.
If you need more vocabs and grammar, we have immersive classes that might meet your need. We will be updating a major feature update on stories in a couple of month. There will be more vocabs in this one as well. We currently have no plan to expand our courses.

Hope the information above answered your suggestions well. Wish you have a lovely day!

Very impressive

First of all, I recommend anybody who wants to learn to Chinese to get this app and Duolingo, because both apps are very good but both miss out certain words or phrases so they compliment each other. I would personally recommend you use Duolingo it’s because their method of teaching allows you to learn the characters a little faster.

I have lived in China 5 years and my Chinese is therefore pretty good, but I finished Duolingo and then redownloaded this app after four years to practice before doing my HSK tests. Hello Chinese has improved a lot and has a lot of great features now. You do need to pay to go past a certain point, but if you are like me and just want to review and freshen up, then you can buy a month’s premium and go through the app quickly.

Very good app, thanks for your hard work.
