Missing the Z-axis that made the original great
Great game very much in line with the original and I hope Homeworld 3 with all the ships and lore I remember but missing the big thing that set Homeworld apart. There’s no 3D element! The RTS of the original game was amazing with use of the Z axis but it’s the one thing this game is missing over the PC version of the game. Also can get sound on ipad but only through headphones on iPhone?
Ok game
Pretty standard ‘click through pre defined missions/campaign game’ marketed as RPG. Great to see Homeworld coming to mobile and it does stay true to the original game which is great, but you never really gain control of what you’re doing and where you’re going. Instead you just pres the next highlighted button and after a while you don’t even read the text pop ups.
The UI is extremely fiddly on mobile phone and the plethora of menus and buttons is really confusing and unintuitive. I spent quite a while playing and could never remember where stuff is - but then again you don’t really need to know as you’re walked through and instructed to do everything anyway.
You spend a lot of time jumping to different places to do missions, but every place looks the same and you complete the same mission over and over again. After the 10th star system, the names become irrelevant as you don’t know where you are in the wider universe and you’ll never need to come back anyway.
The best part of the original Homeworld was researching and building a fleet of cool ships which all work is different ways to take on different challenges in different environments. This unfortunately hasn’t translated across to this game - in fact you are restricted to a small number of slots in your fleet so building interesting combinations of ships is impossible.
As I say it’s ok, but not worth too much time.
Not Good for Homeworld
The game looks great but gameplay is awkward and difficult to control. There is also no indication on how to complete mission objectives. I’m currently trying to dock with the Lazarus trading station and can’t. The game also skips to the next objective if you close and reload it, or lose connection and need to reconnect. You should be able to return to exactly where you were in the game.
There are far too many in-game purchasables and this looks set to be another fantastic game series with a ruinous cash-grab attempt at a mobile instalment (Lemmings anyone?). A real shame and bad point for the Homeworld franchise where a good game released for a few pounds that had solid gameplay and better features would have gained a lot of popularity and some real excitement for the upcoming Homeworld 3 release.
