Description
iKana touch is the fun and easy way to learn Japanese hiragana and katakana! The app features flash cards, a beginners dictionary and quizzes to teach you how to read and write kana and learn Japanese words.
Practice with flash cards which let you easily toggle romaji on and off, see stroke order animations, shuffle them around and practice writing each character on the screen as much as you need to. Each character is voiced by a native Japanese speaker so you can learn how to pronounce them correctly. Select subsets of kana to practice or build up a practice set from any of the flash card decks.
The Speed Recognition Quiz gets you to try and match romaji and kana characters against the clock! Improve your memory and try and beat your best times! This quiz will help speed up your ability to read Japanese over time.
The Stoke Order Quiz gets you to trace the strokes in each character in the correct order to help teach you to write them. This quiz will help improve your kana writing abilities.
The Romaji Replacement Quiz gets you to complete Japanese words by replacing the missing character from a choice of kana. This quiz will help you to read and understand Japanese words.
The Kana Sound Match Quiz plays kana sounds to you which you then need to match to the correct character. This quiz will help with your ability to understand spoken Japanese and transcribe Japanese characters from speech.
The app features a beginners dictionary with hundreds of useful words you can use as a quick reference. Easily search by kana, romaji or English meaning and hear words pronounced.

Amazing!
This is an absolutely amazing app for a beginner learning the stroke order and characters in hiragana and katakana. The customisable tests allow me to memorise and retain information in a positive and efficient way!
Indispensable
This is an excellent app. The explanations are clear and accurate and it is a terrific aid to learning the Japanese writing system.
Perfect for intuitive learning
Now I'm lazy. Although I can understand many words and sentences already, I have my trouble getting to learn any kana at all. A few weeks ago, I was still sitting on the same 10 or so that I recognise but even then I often mixed them up. I bought the desktop equivalent of this app and very quickly picked up more. Not by looking at them and memorising them, but rather by using the speed test which lets me just perceive the shape and (probably) visually store the character.
Now I can't sit down and write them all again and again or just look at them and get it. Either it's not my learning style or I just dreaded school too much. ;) Either way this is perfect for me and so far one of the neatest looking and best structured apps out there. Especially being able to write the kana is amazing. I would hope to see some of this functionality added to the desktop versions (which are also well worth their money, especially on an advanced level). Admittedly it'd be awkward with a mouse but I and possibly many other use a stylus or have one handy. Now that you have the functionality it can't be that diffuclt can it? ;)
I find learning like this quite addictive.
