Description

Free antivirus and malware security for your Mac!

Intego Virus-Barrier Scanner can scan and remove Mac and Windows malware with a single click. VirusBarrier Scanner will detect any infected files which you might have downloaded or gotten in your inbox. This way your Mac is always kept safe and you won’t put your friends and family at risk of being infected with malicious files.

Made by the Mac security experts at Intego, VirusBarrier Scanner is a free anti-virus and malware removal tool for iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac Pro. Choose between ‘Maximum Protection’ to easily scan all files which belong to you, or ‘Essential Protection’ to scan locations where malware is commonly found. On-demand manual scanning of individual files or specific locations such as your own Documents or Downloads folders can also be done with ease.

Features:
• Detects OS X, macOS and Windows malware to prevent your Mac from acting as a carrier
• Automatic virus definition updates prior to scans
• Scans for malware automatically or on-demand in all available locations
• Critical locations scan – rapidly scans system areas that are prone to infections
• Scans for viruses in emails for popular clients
• Quarantine or delete dangerous files
• Option to trust files or folders which will be excluded from scan (i.e. Time Machine backups, etc.)
• Easy to use interface with quick drag-and-drop option

Constraints:
• Due to Mac App Store sandboxing, VirusBarrier Scanner can only access the locations to which it is explicitly granted access to. For maximum protection, we recommend granting access to the entire disk.
• Malware removal may be limited by permissions for the user running the app.

A bit above my head this app but I have every confidence in it.

I use my computer heavily every day and constantly on the internet. I’m no longer complaicent about Macs being out of reach of virus, malware, adware and all the other spooky little gremlins that could be running around in my compuer. I need to take action before the gremlins take action on me. Virus Barrier seems to have a solid background and experience tied in with the Intego paid version. I cannot justify paying for the full Intego package but I have confidence Virus Barrier will sufice for my use. Only time will tell but it seems to be doing a great job so far in identifying quite a few malware files which are now repaired and quarantined.

Seems to work well.

At first it seemed to be a bit oversensitive to harmless items, but I haven't noticed that for some time now. It's warned me of a few items that warranted further checking, but so far hasn't actually found anything that was a real threat.

Some years ago I ran another virus checker that eventually proved to be interfering seriously with the operation of the machine and which had to be de-installed for that reason. There has been absolutely no sign of this causing any problems at all. Just oeprates quietly in the background.

Good but, older machine will grind to halt

It appears to be a good product (very hard to tell how good any AV product is until actual product or rivals go wrong). The dowsnide of this product is when performing the daily full scan it makes the machine unusable. Everything grinds to a halt, even simple browsing. I find I have to stop the scan if I have to complete work. I can imagine video conferencing for example would not be fluid if the scan is running. Changing the scan schedule does not seem possible or at least it isn't intuitive. As a career Information Security professional I'd advise the vendor to focus on being less resource intensive. My machines are about 6 years old but iwth good specs and latest OS.
