iWalk Cornwall is a digital walking guide providing circular walks with detailed directions and local information based on over a decade of fieldwork and research. Both the app and walks are designed and developed in Cornwall and have a big local following. Routes are continually being checked and updated with help from the local community. iWalk Cornwall was Highly Commended in the 2017-2018 Cornwall Tourism Awards and a finalist in the 2017 Cornwall Sustainability Awards. The app is free to download. Walks are purchased from within the app which includes ongoing free updates. The "Lanhydrock Gardens" walk is included with the app for free so you can try it out, and there is a simulation mode so you can do so without driving there. Over 300 walks are available in all areas of Cornwall, classified by steepness and length and themes such as coastal walks and pub walks. New walks are also continually being added. Features: - Tracks your location using the GPS receiver on your device, providing real-time information as you follow the walk route. - Directions are triggered by your location, with a beep/vibrate notification when there’s a new direction for you to follow. - Based on your location, provides information about points of interest along the walk. - Includes an accurate map of the walk route and surrounding area, showing where you are on it and which way you are facing. - Warns you if you wander off the walk route, intelligently based on local knowledge (i.e. not with a blind "computer says no" where there is something legitimate to go and see) - Tells you how far you have left to go and an estimate of time remaining based on your personal walking speed - Keeps an eye on your battery and if it doesn't look like it will last the walk, offers a number of power-saving strategies - Once walks are downloaded, the app doesn’t need a mobile signal or internet connection. - Walks are continually being checked and updated - updates are downloaded for free The app also includes a mechanism to feed back any footpath issues that you spot to help us work with the Local Authority Countryside Team and parish councils to maintain Cornwall's footpath network. Note: Users of Wifi-Only (non-cellular/3G) iPads will need an external GPS device to navigate using this app Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Excellent walk companion

There are so many things to love about this app. So much thought and attention has gone into it. I used it recently on a family walk over Bodmin Moor. The app is free, and the directions with GPS are bought individually, are an excellent price and worth every penny. It’s very easy to switch between written directions and map view which tracks your exact location along the route. The instruction are clear and easy to understand. To save battery I could check the next step, then leave the phone in my pocket knowing it would ping me if I detoured too much or hit the next check point. Our whole walking group looked forward to the next ping because of how interesting the information would be about where we were and what we were looking at. There is so much information! It’s literally like having a real-time tour guide in your pocket. We would have missed so many points of interest had it not been for this app. It was also vastly reassuring to know we couldn’t get lost in this new and unfamiliar area. We only did one walk via the app, but we found it be accurately graded in terms of difficulty which is vital when planning walks. There will always be a certain charm to walking with a proper paper map, and map reading is an important skill of course. That said, it was nice not to be wrestling with an unwieldy map on top of a moor in the wind and rain for a change. Highly recommend it, and hope one day there will be sister apps for other counties.

Great app - responsive and reliable

We have been using this app for just over a year and it’s the best walking app we have tried by far. The directions have taken us to new routes even in places we thought we knew well. The step by step directions work really well, even in places where the phone reception wasn’t great. There is also interesting contextual information. The App will let you know if you deviate from the track. I was particularly impressed by the response when we reported a new, temporary hazard (the marsh to be crossed on the Stanton walk was knee deep after heavy rain). I reported the issue at night, and John the app developer had changed the information for the walk by the following morning. Do make sure your phone is fully charged though before walking. My year old iPhone starts the walks at 100% but ends on about 25% - I think the GPS on iPhones is quite hungry for battery. Really recommend this app. It’s well worth the price of downloading the walks (which you do individually)

Both myself and my brother are Autistic and have no sense of direction. We have previously tried the "classic walks: cornwall" book and I struggled greatly being able to interpret some of the directions. Since the app has GPS, it worked even when there was no signal, and I could switch between written directions (with added additional interesting information about the environment etc), which would automatically update as I reached certain points, and a map with a moving arrow that helped me reorientate myself if necessary. Went round Golitha Falls, and Siblyback lake, which is an area that we're not familiar with, and found it very easy to enjoy the scenery as the app did all the heavy lifting. You can also turn your phone off on the wall as it'll beep to alert you if you've gone off track, or reached another way mark. Thoroughly recommend.

The next app release will also include automatic rotation of the map in the direction of travel (i.e. up on the phone will be forwards on the route) to make it easier to process for many people who don't find it easy to mentally rotate the direction they are facing onto "north is up" maps.

Unlike so many apps that promise you helpful advice & guidance for walking, this one really delivers. We came across it by accident while on holiday and have used for two excellent circular walks that we’d never have worked out for ourselves. Love the way it tells you if you go away from the route - very reassuring (even if it’s intentional 😊)Did find it a bit glitchy switching between the written directions and the map which was frustrating. And would be great to have a choice of pricing models - £2.99 for a single walk is really good value but over a week or two weeks’ holiday would add up very quickly, so having the option of a weekly or monthly subscription would be fabulous. And would love to have a version for our home county of Derbyshire - SO many people would get such value from it in the glorious Peak District.

We're sticking to Cornwall for the foreseeable future as an essential part of keeping the directions accurate is that we need to physically drive to each walk location and re-walk to the route on a regular basis to check and update the directions for changes to the path furniture and signage (which happens pretty continuously). (The pricing structure also follows from that as each walk needs to independently fund its own ongoing physical upkeep).If you have a moment sometime to give us a bit more info about what seemed glitchy in the switching behaviour from directions to map, we can see if we can capture some usability or performance tweaks for the next app release (either contact us on more options in the app if you still have it installed or apps@iwalkcornwall.co.uk will also reach us).Thanks again for taking the time to leave a detailed review.
