Ling - Language Lessons 4+

LITERALLY AMAZING!!

I literally just stumbled across this app on Google an hour ago, saw it could teach Tagalog and now I’m HOOKED!! For the longest time I’ve been wanting to learn my native language as my parents never taught me but didn’t know where to go to or how to start because such a ‘niche’ language is not typically made available as an education. Yet this app made it so accessible, easy and clear, explaining the grammar too!

Maybe one thing to improve for Ling is to allow for a retry/to go back to a question when I make mistakes within the same lesson, I take so I can strengthen my knowledge better.

Other than that, I’m so excited to continue learning and maybe pick up another language entirely too!

This app could be so much more !

The app provides high quality education to an extent with the comprehensive activities it provides to learners, however i believe the activities themselves are fairly insufficient and extremely repetitive.

The repetitiveness is beneficial but only to a certain threshold where you’re are still left wondering about certain grammatical inquires etc.

Things they should add to vastly improve the app :

1) Add a section where students can free write in whatever language a student is studying and have a marking feature that shows when you are incorrect in any way grammaticaly, vocabulation wise etc.

2) Add a vocal studying section, where students have the ability to practise pronounciation and fluency, which is arguably the most detrimental part of learning any new language and it would seriously seperate Ling from other language learning apps massively.

3) Make the examinations at the end of each lesson much longer and more versatile with the questions being asked to students. I feel as if the questions are so predictable and repetitive which really limits the learner from absorbing the necessary information and questioning (that they would occur in a real scenario speaking whatever language) that is needed in order to acheive true fluency.

Poor App, but only option

Short version:

(1) extremely limited practice sentences.
(2) have to memorise the word ordering they want in your native language. In English this is flexible, so it’s a game of “guess what order I used!”
(3) sometimes updates just stop you taking lessons.

If it’s your only option… it’s somewhat okay. Just not good.

Longer version:

Other reviewers are correct. This App could be so much better with a bit more thought.

Sentences to practice only have one example. You end up knowing what sentence is coming from the first two words, which really lowers you attention and the educational value. It could be done procedurally so you learn to use a grammatical construct with a variety of word options... Or just enlarge the example database.

You will be randomly told you are wrong and “lose a life” for things like:
The ball is black and green
Vs
The ball is green and black
Even if you follow the ordering in the example they give.

I am currently writing this review rather than practicing because their latest update has prevented me opening any exercises. You click a lesson, get asked your native language and taken back to the lesson selection page. Infinite loop.

This is the experience you can expect. Frustrating and somewhat demotivating.

On the plus side, the team actually let you learn minority languages… which is cool.

I just wish the App was so much better.
