Undergoing a healthcare procedure can be a daunting experience for anyone, especially as a child. Whether as part of routine care or a clinical trial, Little Journey supports children and their families from contemplation to full recovery through this award-winning app. The simple-to-use app guides and supports children and their families through their healthcare journey – all from the comfort and safety of their own home. We support children through: • Virtual reality tours enabling them to explore the exact rooms they’ll visit while in hospital. • Age-tailored animations explaining what will happen and why. • Breathing and relaxation exercises. • Therapeutic and distraction games to use during stressful periods. Little Journey helps parents by: • Drip feeding information before, during and after their procedure. • Providing small bitesize chunks of information to assist with information retention. • Making it easier talk to children about what’s going to happen. • Providing checklists, hints and tips, and nudges to make sure you’re all ready to go. Little Journey was founded by an NHS doctor and researcher into children’s anxiety management. With support from children and their families, health play specialists, psychologists, nurses and doctors, the Little Journey app was born! We’ve continued to work with families and hospital staff to improve the app and expand to support families through more procedures. What an amazing idea! My little girl has used this app in preparation for an overnight stay in hospital recently. She was very wary at first as, although she has visited hospitals previously, this was to visit family members, she has never had to stay longer than her appointment times!The app was amazing in providing the right amount of information she needed in the different areas of the hospital. She watched the videos, explored the areas and looked at the different equipment that would be used in her time at the hospital many times in the run up to her operation. Once there, she was excited for her “sleep over”, showed no signs of anxiety or worry of the upcoming procedure, and knew what was coming and when. This is a great app for not only children of all ages to explore, but for parents too! I found the information section for parents in the corner was very good in explaining what to expect in the run up to her operation dates. This information answered lots of questions that had built up from the initial consultation which settled my mind a lot. “This app has helped me to feel confident in going in to hospital for my operation” P aged 8

Absolutely brilliant for kids and adults too. This really helped my 7 year old with what to expect on the day of her surgery. Plus gave good information for us parents too. Make you feel more at ease and definitely helps with the nerves for both parent and child. Will be recommending this app to other parents. Plus there is games to play on this app whilst waiting to go in for surgery or appointment. Will use this app again if any of my children have to go through any surgery.

Great app as a starter point

We found this app great for our 6 year old to ease her into what to expect before she went in for her surgery. She liked the games, however there could be a few more - perhaps a snap type game on equipment docs and nurses will use to familiarise them with them etc. She loved seeing the step by step journey, although I feel that you missed out a bit step after recovery. The cannula in her hand, we had forgotten about this and there is no mention of this on the app. This was a huge thing for her and found it very traumatic that this was in her hand and has to be taken out too. All in all, a useful app but needs a bit of tweaking.

He loved using the app and knew all the different types of doctor and the equipment when we went in. He enjoyed showing off his knowledge to the medical team and was so happy and relaxed the whole time. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to every parent with a little one who needs an operation. It definitely made a big and positive difference!
