Great hardware, average app

I have tried a number of electricity monitors (Loop also offer a gas monitor that I haven't used) and Loop is easily the best. The hardware is reliable, well designed, and with a remarkable reach from transmitter to receiver. However, the web and app service needs to be developed further. Basic .csv download of your data is available but only in arbitrary segments (hourly usage for the last day, daily for the last week, weekly for the last month, and monthly for that last quarter). The iOS app is not really a proper app, rather an encapsulated form of their website. Real time and summary data takes a long time to load and push notifications are not available.

A more inspired app needs to be produced but the hardware and customer service is brilliant.

Ok, but could do better.

Liked the sound of the device and have taken on the trial. Time will tell if this proves useful, but the Apple App is terrible. This isn't really an app, it's more of an Internet browser port. Does most basic functions that you would want but they are executed poorly. Amending any options on iPhone is very fiddly or in some cases doesn't seem possible (or otherwise aren't very intuitive!).

Update: Now had this several days and the app improves over time as more features become unlocked. Still think things could be better presented and put in easier places to find but does provide some useful info about when you are using a lot of electricity during the day, so you can try and reduce your consumption.

Preferable to any Smart Meter

I’ve been using Loop for almost three years now to monitor both gas and electricity usage. It’s independent of energy supplier or government quango and so is trustworthy in collecting and presenting results. There’s no hidden agenda (smart meters can facilitate differential charging across demand levels).

Signing up results in receiving a gas meter reader and electricity supply monitor soon after downloading the app. These come with full instruction for fixing to current meters, both digital and analogue (dials and wheels). Readings reach the smartphone or tablet via WiFi and a dongle to plug into one’s router.

The variety of usage interpretations is good and even relates consumption to external temperature. Visuals are clear and offer analyses and interpretation. However, there’s no easy way to export results to (eg) a spreadsheet for more detailed tracking, hence 4 stars.

A big bonus is being able to compare different suppliers’ charges for actual fuel usage and to change companies if a significant advantage is spotted.

All the benefits of smart meters seem to be addressed but without the risk of being conned by variable tariffs.
