Description

Old Norse can be studied as the language of the Eddas and the Icelandic sagas; the ancestor of the Scandinavian tongues; or, because of the Viking presence in the British Isles, a major influence on the development of English. But while many of its words are recognisable, the connections are often vague or misleading, and it follows a more complicated grammar than most of its modern relatives. The answer is ultimately memorisation, which is where Liberation Philology Old Norse can help.

Whenever you have a moment to spare, your phone can call up a rolling multiple-choice test that helps you practise Old Norse vocabulary and grammar. Each answer you give is immediately confirmed or corrected, and your knowledge is reinforced by as much repetition as you find useful.

• Vocabulary: 335 levels, each testing your ability to translate ten words between English and Old Norse. Interspersed among these are cumulative levels reviewing what has been learned earlier (for a total of 377 levels).

• Nouns: Tests your ability to parse and to decline all types of Old Norse nouns.

• Pronouns: Tests the declension of Old Norse pronouns.

• Verbs: Tests your ability to parse and to conjugate Old Norse verbs, present and past, indicative and subjunctive, active and middle (revised and expanded in 2020).

An additional Reference module allows you to review the word-list for the vocabulary test, and the paradigms for nouns, verbs, and pronouns.

Super app - but room for improvement

This app is really good for learning and drilling vocabulary, declining nouns and practising conjugating verb forms. The content is considerable and the level of training is in-depth. One cannot quibble too much with the basic concept. So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well some improvements could be made. For one the vocabulary testing should be based on word-frequency studies, which is apparently not the case now. You should start off with the most common words in the language and gradually progress to the less common ones. But some words are already occurring at an early stage that I've never heard of, and I did a total of 4 years of ON and modern Icelandic at university. Next, I would like to see some way of Favouriting particular words you want to test later into a separate list. That would be a splendid and extremely useful feature as at the moment you can only keep drilling a word by staying on the same level all the time. Then I would like the option of adding your own words. Then I would like to see other ways of testing you on the words than mere multiple choice, which isn't necessarily always the strongest way, such as by making you type in the ON counterparts of the English words. That really would be challenging. Finally the app includes 49 model verbs fully conjugated as a reference. I would like to see many more verbs than this and the ability to search them. What a powerful reference tool that would be. Overall, then, this is a superb app and very useful in improving your ON vocabulary and testing several aspects of your grammar knowledge. A few extra features and it would easily warrant 5 stars. But even now for the price it's an absolute steal!

Daring idea

This is what the internet is for: access to those thing before it arrived.
There is a wide variety of drills and paradigms in all these languages.
The developer may wish to consider making a way of recording what the user forgets for a retest, perhaps also a more effective random selector.
Great stuff; carry on!

For scholars

If like me you haven’t got a degree in English literature and know things such as genitive and nominative etc and you are just looking to learn old Norse this is not for you.

You have to know some things (unless just doing the vocabulary section) to learn from this otherwise it’s just a hap hazard multiple choice basher without learning the difference between word forms or how to use them in sentences.
