Description
Ipsos MediaCell+ can only be used by invitation and is solely for eligible opted-in participants of Ipsos market research activities.
Ipsos MediaCell+ is an Ipsos market research application which passively collects information about your device and how you use the internet. This will help our clients shape the future of publishing and media in the UK.
It is important to underline that no individual information will be ever shared with our clients, but only averages or aggregated data. We just need you to enable the prompted notifications and permissions and keep the app running in the background of the phone and you’re good to go! In return, you’ll be rewarded via a points based system. And the longer you comply with our simple rules, the more rewards you can earn.
Ipsos MediaCell+ utilizes a VPN service to monitor your web traffic. This on-device VPN is not an external server and does not modify your network traffic in any way. The Ipsos MediaCell+ app will also use the device microphone to listen out for coded audio or to generate digital audio fingerprints to measure the TV or radio stations you are tuned to; it will never record any audio.
Ipsos takes very seriously its responsibilities for the security and confidentiality of the information supplied to us by those who take part in the research we carry out.
• We take every care to ensure that we comply with our legal, regulatory and ethical obligations, including GDPR and the Market Research Society Code of Conduct
• We’ll never transfer, sell or distribute your personal information
• We don’t collect the content of emails, SMS or other messages you send
• All data transferred from the mobile device to our servers is encrypted with RSA public/private key encryption before uploading, as well as being transferred over HTTPS
• We don’t collect data from personal websites or apps such as banking
• The app can be uninstalled at any time to stop all data collection immediately

• When leaving the panel, it is your responsibility to uninstall the app and the VPN certificate in order to prevent further collection of data

Not for me
Thought I’d give it a go after being phoned and asked to do this. Within an hour of installing the app I realised it wasn’t for me. You have to set it up to listen so the mic is constantly on. This in turn stopped other apps from working correctly. My ring doorbell and cameras didn’t audibly notify me so I missed an important visit. On testing why the doorbell wasn’t working the only change was this app. I switched off the monitoring on this app and doorbell worked again, switched it on again and doorbell stopped notifying again so the app was deleted.
My phone stopped working
I saw the reviews and I said I would still give it a try, the microphone has to be on the max time as it can’t collect enough data otherwise. Now at first my phone was okay but soon I stop receiving notifications which I didn’t like, then my phone became slow as if I had no wifi or data.
Even when I would pause the microphone when I got calls people were saying I was muffled as soon as I uninstalled the app my phone began working properly.
Improved.
I think the reward for running the app in the background is sufficient. It’s not without its glitches and certainly does seem to interfere with apps and process’ but it’s not horrific.
If like me, your an app fiend you get to notice. Often things don’t open up from FB links etc but it’s not too terrible.
Mind you I am patient, tolerant and easy going - so there is that…
