What other learners are saying
"I've been using Memrise for about two years, studying European Portuguese. I have the paid version - it's a solid learning tool, and it has been my primary resource ever since got it. I find the Learn with Locals feature to be especially useful, more so as my Portuguese improves. My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Portugal a few months ago, and we were able to handle all of our transactions - stores, restaurants, markets, car rental, etc!" - Voloúre

The most fun of all the language learning apps
Owsi2
And for me making it fun and keeping me interested is at least half the battle when it comes to learning languages (my school experience of language learning was that it was like some exquisite torture). So far after a good amount of time spent I am definitely improving, think the sequencing of material is broadly appropriate for day to day use and is “natural” as opposed to being academic, I like the various different ways the software teases me into trying to beat myself and win little awards (I learn best with lots of encouragement and less time spent feeling a failure) and the other elements of “gamification”. I think the inclusion of a camera based real time “what is the word for this thing” tool is cool and though I haven’t used it in earnest it’s enough for me to feel proud of the app. And whoever thought to include the phrase “you are a genius” was a real genius. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud and beam when it taught me that - caught me completely off guard and I felt like I had a new friend helping me learn.
Good but...

Overall, the App. is great. There are some tweaks which I would suggest you make to improve it. Some buttons are too small, like the speaker icon for repeating the audio - if you don’t hit it exactly dead-on, it won’t play the audio. Also, some multiple choice exercises are irritating because, when one already knows the answer, but has to rummage through six choices of wildly different options to find it, it can just be a waste of time. A better option would be, instead of having six options to choose from all wildly different and none of which, except the correct choice, vaguely resembling the correct answer, you could have two or three options which are all similar in meaning to the correct answer - this way the searching has a purpose, rather than just slowing down the process of finding an the obvious answer. Update - Also, the multiple-choice exercise is often so slow in responsiveness that often I’ll tap a choice and nothing will happen. If you try to tap them in order with any speed at all, some will not respond and you’ll end up with a jumbled up sentence that you then have to waste time fixing. These are small and easily fixable things, so it’d be a shame if they were left-in.

Good for learning, slightly annoying

I chose the Japanese course, first lesson it shows you a few hiragana characters as well as 1-2 words/phrases. Every other lesson from then on teaches you one more phrase/word as well as quizzing you on words/phrases from previous lessons. They also included two short videos, one where you have to mark every time you hear a certain phrase, and another where you have to answer a question after hearing some short dialogue. Since I have been learning Japanese with other apps, the short videos aren’t that hard to understand, but if this is someone’s very first time learning, it may be hard for them to answer the questions. Though from the video, you can hear the tones in the voices as well as how some vocab is used. BUT the main thing I dislike about this app is how there is a long pause after I get a question or answer right. Or if a video plays with a phrase, and you guess the correct answer, the video replays itself before moving on. Personally I find this to feel really slow, there’s also no button to move on before it replays. And quite honestly, the videos they show of how to write and say the certain characters can also make the process feel slow, sure it’s great to see how the characters are written, but it would be better if it were two videos side by side, so that you can hear the pronunciation as the person writes the character. Other than that, the videos can also seem a little cringe? Or over dramatic in a way, The people pronouncing the sounds seem to over pronounce them, or it’s just a awkward pause before and after they say the sound. They also have examples of people saying the different phrases, some of them are fine, but with some people saying the phrases, it just doesn’t sound or look authentic.
