What’s New

Version 8.2.0

New fields for the work-breakdown view, the assignments view and the resources view:

- Expected Work Variance: Contains the net difference between Expected Work and Planned Work. A positive value means more work compared to the plan.
- Expected Duration Variance: Contains the net difference between Expected Duration and Planned Duration. A positive value means a longer duration compared to the plan.
- Expected Start Variance: Contains the net duration between Planned Start and Expected Start. A positive value means a delay in the start.
- Expected End Variance: Contains the net duration between Planned End and Expected end. A positive value means a delay at the end.
- Expected Cost Variance: The difference between Expected Costs and Planned Costs. A positive value means increased costs compared to the plan.

More flexibility in the assignments view:

In the assignments view, you can now also display selected fields of the associated activities in rows for assignments. The following new columns are available for this purpose:

- Code (Activity)
- Notes (Activity)
- Tags (Activity)
- WBS Code (Activity)
- # (Activity)

In addition, all user-defined activity fields are available as columns and are also identified by the suffix "(Activity)".
You can also display the corresponding fields of the assigned resources in the work-breakdown view. The columns are marked with the suffix "(Resource)".

More overview in the work breakdown view:

- Customize the display of assigned resources via the context menu of the resource column. With the new "Show content" option, you can now select whether column content is only displayed on the activities or also on activity groups.
- Via the context menu of the comment column, you can now set whether the resource names in the column are displayed in full or only with abbreviations. You can also select the format for date and time values.

Changes:
- The minimum operating system is now iOS 15.
- The view settings inspector now closes automatically when you select a new table row.
- If you enter actual work values without a time unit in the inspector, the unit is automatically taken from other fields already filled in.
- When setting up the first user, Merlin Project now automatically asks you whether guests should have full access, read-only access or no access at all.
- If activities are still assigned when deleting resources, a warning dialog is now displayed.
- Timescale tiers in Gantt charts can now also be selected via the "Display > Timescale > Tiers" menu.
- Objects can now also be moved by dragging when the help function is activated.
- When adding new columns, you can now select multiple list entries.

Fixed issues:
- Documents from some MindManager versions could not be imported.
- File attachments could receive an incorrect timestamp.
- The earned-value BCWP was not always calculated correctly.
- When changing print settings, the print preview did not always adjust correctly.
- Reports with charts for activities with very long titles could not be exported or printed.
- CTRL clicks did not work in the style inspector.
- No values could be set for certain date fields in filters.
- General stability has been improved.

Simply Great

This app (and its macOS counterpart) leave all other project management software standing. The wealth of functionality and views that are packed into a tiny app by today’s bloatware standards is just a master class in how software should - and CAN - be produced.

I particularly love the ability to attach risks, issues, files, check lists, events & more to individual activities and then to track all these directly within the app itself. Add to this the Kanban view which allows a combined waterfall + agile approach to managing your projects, and Merlin Project really does pretty much do it all, and in such a simple, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing manner.

If I were to have to highlight one or two areas for improvement, I would say [1] documentation could be improved to describe better how each field or function can/should be used, perhaps with some examples; [2] add user-definable formula fields (for real-time, on-the-fly calculations based on other field values); [3] beef up the reporting & export functionality (at least for macOS if not for this iOS version) which are both a bit on the light side, and uncharacteristically fiddly for an app which otherwise achieves so much with such little effort.

I have been a long-time user of Merlin Project since its early days, and it just keeps getting better and better. Highly recommended for anyone involved in project management and able to work on Mac / iPad.

Architecture/Design management

I’ve been a casual user of Merlin for several years as an architect and contractors site design manager. I’ve been honing my Merlin skills to scope, track and allocate and sequence the complex design tasks to individuals. Merlin is flexible, great for scoping and solving problems and of course graphics flexible, varied and beautiful. The technical support is good too.

Developer Response ,

Thank you very much for your review and feedback. We are pleased that Merlin is helping you with your work.

Mac and iPad apps great (4 star) & iPhone useful but 3 star and could be great

Brilliant app. Well worth the subscription. Just so powerful. Brings the power of trello, MS project, plus many other tools together. Love it. Rated 4 star rather the 5 only because would really appreciate a more powerful iPhone experience.

A few hopes & wishes for iPhone app that lags a little behind:

Hoping a fix comes for app urls that don’t work on the iPhone app.

Also, without filtering, the iPhone app is far less useful than it could be. Saved filters work great across Mac and iPad, and would bring great value to iPhone. As would kanban and mindMap modes. Are you able to support these?

Developer Response ,

Thank you very much for your review. Your hopes & wishes are forwarded to developers and management. Our devs are quick in issue fixing. New features or solving the missing spacing problem on the iPhone for a kanban or mind maps need some more time and thinking. We'll be glad to let you know as soon as there are news. Thanks again.
