Description

Grab a solar board and surf the moon’s dusty hills and steep craters. It is up to you – if you roam freely, perhaps practicing some kickflips, or if you head directly to the marked waypoints.

All the game’s 5184 areas are procedurally generated. The landscapes early in the game, are reminiscent of NASA’s Apollo program. But, when you reach the far side of the moon, the terrain algorithm gets increasingly out of hand, producing an ethereal topography, suited only for the most experienced of players.

Moon Surfing’s online server keeps track of your progress and the progress of all other players. You will know which areas have been conquered already, and when. All players are in this together.

Unexpectedly brilliant

Behind the unassuming name lurks a great and very original game.

It takes a while to learn the basics: You have a solar powered board, you’re on the moon, you have to reach each blue dome in an area to unlock the next area. You start with 30 seconds, ticking down. Go through blue gates to gain 10 seconds. Any time you’re in the air, the clock is paused.

Take these simple rules, add procedural level generation, nice visuals and a great sense of speed and you have an often exhilarating, often tense, almost open world (you get to choose your routes), almost survival-themed game. It’s at its best when you keep retrying a route, trying to shave off those seconds... or you’re barrelling down ravines, looking out for a hill or gate to save time. It can be very strategic and the random levels throw a load of curveballs your way, while still feeling fair and well designed.

Speaking of design, this is great across the board. Slick UI and a lot of subtle but useful touches... the HUD markets indicating rocks and gates... and the trails left by your board on previous attempts.

This deserves a wide audience. It’s grabbed me like no iPhone game in a while.

RELAXING

An odd little game that should be developed further as the whole idea of surfing on the moon is just brilliant.

The graphics are great but there must be something that can be done to make them eye-popping gorgeous. This game has a load of potential. Good work to have a develop this it’s such a super idea and so original

Not what you’ll expect it to be

I downloaded this game expecting another one of those cliché touchgrind skate copies but after playing for a while The game has grew on me. It is no cliché touchrgind copy it is extemely unique - the first time I’ve ever seen a open world skate style sports game. I even played the £1.99 for the full version and I am absolutely in awe.

Good job devs!
