Description

Moonlight Mahjong is Mahjong Solitaire in virtual reality 3D, designed specifically for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Intuitive touch control allows you to tilt and turn, zoom in and out to match tiles in 3D. Play “arcade style” with progressively difficult levels and high scores, or relax with one of the non-competitive game modes. The gameplay is simple yet addictive.

Moonlight Mahjong features four main types of play:

• Scramble Mode: Match tiles faster than the automated opponent "Tilebot" through increasingly difficult levels. The board is automatically reshuffled when you run out of matches, making this game mode easy to start and fun, yet challenging on the higher levels.

• Challenge Mode: Compete against Tilebot in full puzzle mode, with no automatic reshuffling, only undo. Challenge requires more strategy than Scramble. This is the ‘pure’ form of the game, but it is difficult!

• Puzzle Mode: Solve puzzle boards with no time limit. Choose any layouts you like. This is the original game mode, what people usually think of as Mahjong Solitaire.

• Relaxation Mode: Clear boards with no time limit and automatic reshuffling when out of matches. Perfect for when you're just not in the mood to strategize or rush.

Feel free to download the free Lite version with ads, or purchase the paid version without ads. They are the same game; the paid version has a few additional features.

Moonlight Mahjong is the original 3D Mahjong Solitaire on iOS, having debuted with the launch of the App Store in 2008. It has been honored as a "Best Board Game" on the App Store, and was in the original Best 100 Apps and Games on iLounge.com.

Continues to challenge

It’s a simple idea well executed. It took me a while to learn the shapes on the tiles, and more to keep pace with the computer game, but even now (after hundreds of plays) I can’t beat it every time. I particularly struggle with 3D boards. So despite being a simple game concept it has some staying power. I seem to waver from the 50s down to the high 30s and back again in terms of levels - but the boards don’t get harder, the level just reflects more wins than losses. So if you like simple puzzle games, this might be up your street!

Cooperative mode killed by iOS 10.2 >:-(

v3.2.2, 16 Feb '17: 4 stars
I upgraded my devices to iOS 10.2 (iPhone 6 from 10.1, iPad mini from iOS 9.3), and now cooperative mode no longer works. Have written to developer, but problem is with Apple, not dev. Don't upgrade to 10.2 if you play co-op mode!

v3.2.2, 07 Jun '16: 4-stars, "Sync between devices & resequence user backgrounds would be nice"
Same comments as before, plus it would be nice if the choice of user backgrounds could be resequenced on "Edit", not only deleted.

v3.1.3, 25 Oct '15: 4-stars, "Great game; sync between devices would be nice"
My first "favourite" game; the first game that I installed on my iPhone 3GS, and still a great game. Really good that the developer keeps updating it, so that it continues to be a joy to play. It would, without hesitation, be a five-star app, but for the fact that I have two devices - iPhone and iPad mini - and it would be a nice touch (maybe by a toggle switch?) if the app were to give you the choice of either playing separate games between the two devices (as at present) or to play the same game on the two devices, Handoff-style. If that could be added, it would definitely have that fifth star back.

Beautiful Interface, Relaxing Game

I have worked my way through many Mahjong apps and this is the one I come back to time and again. The user interface is fantastic with 3D tiles that can be manipulated in all directions so that free tiles can easily be viewed. There are so many different game play options so it is impossible to get bored. The options are customisable to make games easier or harder depending on what you want. You can play against 'Tilebot' and race to complete games first or you can play just for relaxation. I took off one star as there is limited tile art to choose from, however you can upload your own backgrounds. This is a great game which could take up far too much time if you're a little lacking in self discipline!!
