Ratings and Reviews
Great devices, App not quite there...
So, Yamaha MusicCast... the functionality and sound of the devices is excellent and, when the app is working well, it’s simple and easy to use. However, most of the time this isn’t. The app is quirky, browsing media servers doesn’t cache any results so, if you want something at the end of the alphabet you have to scroll, wait, scroll, wait etc to get there. WHY? Everyone else can manage this! Likewise, if you have multiple control devices (iPad, phone etc) the musiccast devices can disappear from one device and not the other (randomly). It’s infuriating. There’s no search functionality so large libraries are a pain (prob linked to the view being live not cached) and the app itself is not super stable... finally, the app has to be configured for each device you use it on. Super annoying given the cloud exists or at least the ability to save and export profiles should happen. That said, it is updated frequently and it is getting better... just not fast enough
Good but needs improving
The ability to use this app to search your dlna server stored music collection and playback hi-res audio files on decent Yamaha hardware is amazing.
What isn't so amazing is how there is no search function to do this. Want to hear a specific track from your collection of 40,000 songs? Get scrolling my friend. Scroll scroll scroll. And wait for the software to catch up and load the names. Unbelievable and maddening how the ability to search is missing.
Also, if you do wish to spend five minutes scrolling for one song and then eventually add it to a playlist - why is that playlist restricted to one device if you have a multitude of musiccast hardware devices? Ok you can link the units so one is the master and one is the slave, but if you don't want the playlist on two sources, and just want to use the 'other' one - it means turning more than one unit on and then having to shut down the volume of the master unit.
That being said, the control functions all work very well and you can pretty much do all that the remote control does and more (depending on your particular device, I'm using an R-N602 and YSP-1600 sound-bar). I love being able to turn the A and B speakers on or off from within the app - things like this make the implementation a joy.
But come on Yamaha, up the game - no search function! Don't let S*nos win!
Ditto don’t let Sonos win
Yamaha you are almost there....Plays Hi Res files yes ..Sonos doesn’t (big lose) ...everything sounds great with this system if you have a lot of hi res files ..they play well ...EXCEPT that you can’t scrub Flac files and there’s NO SEARCH FUNCTION ....why ? If you have a large music collection you are forever scrolling. This is pretty annoying if you are spending an evening with your music collection on your server.
Plus on the interface why don’t you show how long the song is and when it’s going to end so you can cue up the next one.
You guys have obviously not sat in front of a pair of speakers with a mate listening to your music all night.
Get this right and you have an utter no brainer ...please listen to the community !
