Back to being good.

Update 06 Aug 2022 - a few months ago it alerted me that I would exceed my data allowance by a considerable amount. Investigation showed that it had recorded no mobile data usage for a week or more then dumped it all in one day. It has happened more than once since then so I’m looking for a replacement.
Update 17 Oct 2018 After delete and reinstall it has stopped nagging me to turn on App tracking/VPN (which it had started to do every time I opened it) so is now a good and useful tool.
Previous review: Was a good app but App usage tracking was problematic so after one try I turned off VPN. I don’t want to use app tracking VPN but now it seems I must if I want to use the app. Simple solution. I’m uninstalling the app.

Dear App User,

The VPN is added for feature expansions, increase the accuracy level and overall functionality of the app. You can always disable the VPN by tapping on the settings --> Disable VPN.
We are continuously working to improve the app, so your feedback will be taken into consideration.

Beware of allowing access to VPN...

I have also been using this app for quite awhile and it has been really great.
However (and it is a BIG however,) recently my data almost completely disappeared unexpectedly in a few hours after some fairly light app usage. The app didn’t show anything except ‘unidentified app usage.’
I then took it to my network provider who couldn’t work out why it had been consumed so quickly and then I took it directly into the Apple Store who said that THIS APP was responsible! At one stage it consumed almost 5 GIG of data in about 20 mins!!! The ‘unidentified app’ was Data Manager! The reason clearly has something to do with this new compulsive VPN setting and the way the app transfers all your data usage through this app as this did not happen previously with Data Manager. It has been an extremely costly exercise for me and has caused me so much headache over Christmas when I ran out of data 4 days into my first month!! I’ve had to buy new data packs and also borrow an additional phone from someone to use as a hotspot. Extremely costly (both in money and time) having to go to various places including Apple Genius Bar to diagnose and resolve. I also see from the feedback I am not the only one to have this issue. Very very disappointing.

I’m sure the developer will have the usual hollow words to follow up “We are sorry for your issue. This does not usually happen. Please contact us...” blah blah.

Developer Response ,

Was five stars as a data manager, now it’s two trick pony, mediocre at best...

I have used this for years, recently I haven’t as giffgaff now offer the information that originally wasn’t available (the wasn’t an app back then) and this was great loved the stop watch mode & found it accurate but now it’s not as accurate & is way off target if you use your vpn. I have loads of apps that all want us to use their vpn, like aloha browser. That’s a great browser without the vpn as this was a good data management app until you “gave” us this new feature. I’d rather have the old data counter/stopwatch/timer feature back. If we were going to use a vpn service most of us would choose a dedicated vpn rather than a side show to a browser or data man. It’s just a way to get us onto subscriptions and lord knows I’m not paying anything more. Just keeping an iPhone now is like having a child to support- on top of the carrier monthly fee we now have the arcade & apple music/extra iCloud space,Netflix etc - heaps of other services from apps. It’s easier to use giffgaffs app now to see my data. This is still handy if you swap sims for example but you can’t trust the vpn & if you don’t use it you permanently have a red icon “AT RISK” when there’s no risk at all...
