Useful but limited
Very handy to have controls for your digital hearing aids on your iPhone but I feel it’s still somewhat limited. I was fitted with my hearing aids and initially my hearing specialist couldn’t pair them with my phone on Bluetooth. At the moment I have only the basic programmes on the app and it will be interesting to see if it improves when new programmes are added. The main problem is that if you have Bluetooth on all the time - which you will if you want to enjoy all the benefits - it drains the batteries very quickly. My batteries were lasting only a couple of days which made it impractical so I now switch off the Bluetooth. However, there is no on/off control of Bluetooth in the app. You have to go into your settings on the phone and switch off Bluetooth completely. When Bluetooth is switched on again, even if you don’t want to use it for your hearing aids, it automatically pairs and drains the batteries. Also, when Bluetooth is turned on again, all the previous settings on the hearing aids have to be set again as the previous ones are not remembered. So, to summarise, it’s good but it could be so much better.
I have used the app for a couple of months now with four programmes preset and some listening programmes available too. I am really frustrated that I can’t find a detailed manual and so there are icons I don’t understand eg a block shaped one entitled volume ... which doesn’t seem to do anything. I would especially like to find again the battery percentage chart. Like the previous reviewer I was not warned that Bluetooth would drain the battery and was really surprised that they only last 5 days.
The aids themselves are a little better than the NHS ones that were bigger, but still a disappointment. I chose the colour closest to my blond hair from a palette as no actual samples were available at Specsavers. Isn’t this amazing? Almost £3K for a pair and no actual samples. What turned up, ready for me, was, as everyone at the shop agreed, grey.
First visit to a restaurant with a friend, wearing the aids and using my new iPhone (bought especially for the app). I told her about the aids, otherwise she would think me very rude, fiddling with my phone whilst listening to her. I chose Cafe setting, then Noisy environment setting, and then I wanted the mic to concentrate on my friend sitting opposite me and screen out other noise. That wasn’t possible. When I went back to the audiologist, she explained that spacial configuration is only possible in the Universal setting. That makes no sense to me.
You are theoretically able to check the battery status. Except it bears no relation to reality. A few minutes ago one of my batteries showed almost full; it has just died. Back to the audiologist, who confirmed this happens a lot.
