Description
Use Network Speed Tester to measure the actual transfer speed of your local wifi or wired network. A graph helps you see changes in realtime. Optimize your wifi network by moving or placing your wifi router until you reach the best results.
Make sure to also download the free iOS Client App for even simpler speed tests between Mac and your iPhone/iPad or the Apple TV.
Example Uses
- Verify your network components (swiches, router) to find bottlenecks in your wired network
- Optimize the placement of your wifi router, try different locations until you get the best network performance
- Measure impact of wifi range extenders
- Find the best spot for watching streaming movies in your home
Features
- Accurate performance measuring of your network using client-server technology
- Test local NAS / filesystem
- Get actual real-world network throughput and average speed
- Graphical visualization
- Find test servers automatically via Bonjour services
- Export data to tab text format
To make a proper measurement, you need to have either two Macs in your network, or one Mac and an iOS/tvOS device. (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Apple TV are supported) The Mac will act as a server, the other device as the client for visualizing the results. You can also test via a local NAS / filesystem.

This utility measured the speed at 89Mb/s between an IOS client and a Mac with gigabit ethernet and 802.11ac Wifi Access Points. Other utilities give internet access speeds as circa 250MB/s (also from IOS devices). The user interface and usability is good however.
Brilliant app.
We have a Ubuiquiti Unifi based network and I wanted to test the speed of the Wifi Access Points (we have 4), Speedtest will show me the speed of my internet connection but not the maximum speed I can expect from each device depending on location, this app can.
Its so easy to use, install this app on a Mac, then use another Mac or an iPhone/iPad (expect lower speeds on iOS devices, as these have 2x2 radios, as opposed to the 3x3 ones in modern MacBooks).
Once the app is up and running on the device you want to use as a “Server”, sounds complicated, it isn’t! Just run this app.
Then download the free iOS app and magic happens, now you can test your network speed.
Developer, well done on making a great, easy to use app, now if you could just add latency that would be fab.
Worked for me!
I wanted to measure than LAN (Homeplug) vs WiFi speed of my Media server to AppleTV. I installed this app on a Mac on the LAN network and installed the free 'Network Speed Test' client on the AppleTV. The Client App on the ATV told me that the LAN (Homeplugs) was slower than the WiFi. This solved my media streaming problem, so I'm very happy, did exactly what I wanted.
