The NHS COVID-19 app features:

Alerts: Find out when you’ve been near other app users who have since tested positive for coronavirus or if you have visited a venue where you may have come into contact with the virus.

Check-in: Use the simple QR code scanner to check-in to venues like bars and restaurants.

Latest information: Lets you know the level of coronavirus risk in your postcode district.

Symptoms: Check if you have coronavirus symptoms and see if you need to order a test.

Test: Get a test kit and register your results if you test positive.

Available in English, Welsh, Arabic (Modern Standard), Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Gujarati, Polish, Punjabi (Gurmukhi script), Romanian, Somali, Turkish and Urdu.

The app can be used across UK borders in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Gibraltar, detecting all relevant contact tracing app users (regardless of them using different official apps), alerting them if they have been in contact with coronavirus.

The app has been built in collaboration with some of the most innovative organisations in the world. We have worked with medical experts, privacy groups, at-risk communities and we’ve shared knowledge with the teams working on similar apps in many countries.

Seems decent enough

Tried it as it seems to be pretty simple and intuitive enough to use. Popped in my postcode and it tells me the risk of COVID in my area. I go to places and “check in” by scanning the barcodes, and the app seems to behave well enough.
The information in the app is actually useful - there’s a lot of nonsense about COVID spreading online and through WhatsApp, so it’s nice to have a very clear and definitive place where I can get that information in an easy to read, centralised place.
Others have said it would be nice to track where you are going and update COVID based on that - I think that was omitted to prevent people thinking the app is spying on them, which in that case, good on the developers for being conscious enough to see how it could be perceived by the public and taking action towards reducing that risk of not being able to download. I think a good compromise is a heat map of the UK where people can see where COVID is at high risk without GPS access to keep the data private.
All in all, a good effort on the app. Being an app developer myself, I know how hard it is to get decent feedback so I hope this helps the people behind the app improve but encourage them with the app.

It’s good, but....

I can understand this is most likely still a work in progress, even though we’re all trying it out Live! The thing that’s gotten me is, how can the notifications on your Lock Screen say, “You may have been exposed to someone with Covid 19. Please log in to the app for more info.” You go there and nothing, literally, nothing! Surely there would be a notifications section in there?! An extra section to view any potential problems! But nope, nothing. Having been tested by UCL, I’m negative, which leads to another problem! You don’t seem to be able to log tests by other companies/institutes, their codes aren’t recognised. Also, having only just discovered, apparently when in work, I should be turning the app off (I work in fast food, out of the way of customers, staff are all wearing masks, washing hands every 30 minutes; and sectioned off behind moveable screens). Yet, because a Covid case walked in through the front door, sat down and stayed for more than 15 minutes in the same building, this app notified me that I may need to self isolate! Bit strange, when you haven’t come into contact with a customer for 8 hours! Clarification on if we need to turn off the app in work, needs to be made. ......and for those reading this, please tell your children/teenagers not to share their face masks with fellow class mates, so that they may enter our premises (McD), staff have to refuse them entry if they do!

Important messages from the NHS COVID-19 app will always be visible to you from inside the app. The NHS COVID-19 app uses Apple and Google Exposure Notifications. When exposure logging is switched on, Apple or Google may send you notifications. These may be called COVID-19 EXPOSURE LOGGING or COVID-19 Exposure Notifications. Sometimes it may seem as though these messages disappear, or you cannot click into them. These are default messages from Apple and Google. There is no need to be concerned if you miss or overlook them. You're currently not able to turn off these default Apple and Google notifications. NHS TRACK AND TRACE, my first impressions.

To be honest, after all the drama that’s gone on throughout this pandemic, this is what we needed, we need a clear understanding of where there are infected people, if they have followed the government advice, don’t get me wrong I’m not entirely fond of Boris or his advice as we all know it hasn’t been too clear, but the advice I have been following to a T is the advice from our very own NHS!
Its a simple app, you check in at whatever venue you’re at, it shows you the threat level in the area you’re at as it scans the area for any signs of an infected person, although again it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the clear as not everyone will be too comfortable with this app.
But you can TURN OFF the scanning option, you can set a reminder if you wish to have it scanning again at a later date or the option DONT REMIND ME is also there for those that don’t care much for it.

All in all a pretty basic app, does it’s job, I’ve given Three stars simply because it does tend to drain your battery when you have the app scanning in the background, other than that I can’t see why the general public don’t want to use/download the app, Boris isn’t trying to control everyone, after his handling of the lockdown do we really believe he can control us with an app? Definitely not, he’s a fool, keep safe, keep your distance and we’ll hopefully see each other on the other side of this, peace x

Hello, Thank you for your valuable feed back we are glad to hear you are finding the app useful and we really appreciate your participation. The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and will have minimal impact on your mobile phone battery, especially if you normally have Bluetooth enabled.

If your phone battery is draining much faster than usual, you can check how much battery the app is using compared to other apps. You can usually find this on your phone by following these instructions (the steps may be slightly different, depending on your phone):

Apple iOS: Settings -> Battery

Android: Settings -> Device Care -> Battery

If your phone shows that more than 5% of your battery life is being used by the app, please report a technical problem . To find out why this is happening and to try to help you, please include the following information:

Percentage of battery used.

The make and model of your phone (for example, iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S8).

The operating system (for example, iOS 13.5 or Android Marshmallow v6.0).
