Description

OB-Xd is based on the Oberheim OB-X. It attempts to recreate its sound and behavior, but as the original was very limited in some important ways, a number of things were added or altered to the original design.

OB-Xd was designed to sound as good and as rich as the original. It implements micro random detuning. Also, like many synths of the OB-X's generation, the OB-Xd has no internal effects so its sounds and textures can be greatly enhanced by the use of additional processing like chorus, reverb, delay, etc.

What’s New

Version 1.16

Resolved an issue where the Bend Octave button MIDI CC was being overlapped by another parameter. This has been rectified by reassigning the MIDI CC to number 32.

Improved and Great Sounding

Sound-wise it produces some very good results. A large amount of presets added since my original review(s) and in version 1.7 the ability to save presets and add presets was finally added. All great but the iPad version still lacks the MIDI Learn functionality that the desktop version has. So I can’t use my MIDI controller to alter its controllers as the cc number assign isn’t there. This would be the icing on the cake - hoping it will be added.

Disproportionately like this. Oberheim AUv3.

For no apparent reason, this synth has grabbed me. I used my last GarageBand track, wiped half the instruments out in the end, replacing each one with an instance of AUv3 of this. A bit like the Moogs, this looks perhaps ordinary, but with only the standard Apple EQ adding some ‘air’ to the output, and the standard Apple compressor bumping the signal a bit, this turned out really nice. It’s much better than it may first appear, sitting dusty on the Appstore shelf, is all I can say. It comes to life when judiciously FXd and played. Agree with others, it’s a must for iOS/iPadOS synthesizer players and enthusiasts, electronic musicians, or as Edgar Froese once said ‘Why don’t you just say musicians?!’.

Now an essential synth on iOS

I’ve only had this for the last 8 months, so I think the app was already very stable when I bought it. That being said, the devs continue to support it and release upgrades and fixes, including loads of new patch banks and enhanced MIDI functionality.

I love the sounds I can coax from this and would heartily recommend it.
