Editors' Notes

As kids we were taught to eat our veggies so they didn’t go to waste, yet as adults we’re often desensitized to the amount of unspoiled sustenance discarded worldwide every day. Olio helps find a home for unwanted edibles, using local postings that are a snap to create or browse. Whether a nearby farm is getting rid of excess rhubarb (it makes great pies, honest) or we’re going on holiday and want the chorizo meatballs in our fridge to end up on a neighbor’s plate instead of in the trash, Olio is a feel-good way to reduce food waste.

Need of this century

I wish this app was developed a long time ago!! Food waste is a crime on its own! Bring organisations waste food in huge quantities and contribute to landfill rather then give it away or recycle. I have taken advantage of this app nd make others aware of it! Sharing is caring!! We need to love our planet as resources are limited and day by day it’s becoming harder to produce because of climatic changes. This app not only helps me to save money on food bills but also helps me recycle good food by consuming. I love food but love earth too. Maybe everyone shud join in!! Share it, love it and care for the planet!

Olio

I joined Olio because I was feeling guilty about the surplus food in my fridge and cupboards. It helped me clear out my spice drawer and ask myself why I had ever thought I needed so many nutmegs and jars of chutney in the first place. As well as helping over-stocked cooks be more conscious of what they really need and how their surplus can benefit others, it makes sure unsold food from familiar high street brands and high-end artisan producers doesn’t go to waste. To my surprise I’ve benefitted from this by collecting delicious bread and pastries from my local Food Waste Hero. Another bonus is I’ve met lovely people in my community. You might have to put some effort to attract other Olio users, depending where you live. At the moment it seems perfect for urban food waste warriors and people with food emergencies can be quickly helped by their neighbours. It crashes at busy times and needs updating to keep up with its growing support, but the benefits are enormous.
