Description

There are a lot of running apps out there, but they all have something in common: they are either full of ads, are highly expensive or simply are and look very outdated.

Out-Run tries to solve this with a clean and modern look and being 100% free. In addition to that Out-Run is also one of the few running apps that do not require you to create an account, all information is stored locally and thereby protected from any data leaks or privacy scandals. And if you think: "Where is the catch?" - there is none, you can even have a look at the source code and confirm everything being said here, because Out-Run is fully open-source (source-code: https://github.com/timfraedrich/OutRun ).

# MAJOR FEATURES

- Keep full control over your data

- Record your outdoor workouts (Running, Walking, Hiking, Cycling and Skating)

- View detailed statistics

- Export your workouts as GPX or OutRun-Backup (.orbup)

- Fully customise the recording process

- Synchronise with Apple Health

I hope you love Out-Run just as much as I loved making it and if you find anything I should improve upon, please let me know.

What’s New

Version 1.3

It has been quite a long time since the last update and while I am still working on some more fundamental changes to OutRun this update also marks a huge step in the evolution of this app.

I am very happy to announce that OutRun will now be available in ELEVEN additional languages which brings us to a total of thirteen and all of that thanks to a few really great people, who can be found in this project's README inside the source-code repository.

Other than that not much has changed in this version:

- There is a new contributor tab in settings, listing all the people who have considerably added to OutRun
- and the source-code button was moved from 'Support' to 'App-Info'

And that is that.

Nice clear interface, lacking some features

When I read a review of this app on 9to5Mac, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. As the review said, it has a clear, simple, attractive design. It doesn’t have loads of unnecessary features tagged on, like healthy recipes or a sportswear store. If that’s not enough, it’s just a one time purchase, unlike most other ad-free running apps which use a subscription model.

However, it is missing some key features. My main issue is it doesn’t have an option to keep the screen on while running, which I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t stop tracking your location when the screen goes off. You can probably get around this by enabling “Always Allow” for access to location data, but that’s not something I feel comfortable doing. The other omission is audio updates on your stats during a run, which I like to get at each mile interval. It also takes a few too many taps to start a workout and this process could be much simpler.

However, the app is very new and I’m sure the developer intends to add features with time. On the whole, I’m very impressed with the clean interface and the clear focus on what what matters in an app like this: running.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think I might have found a way for you to be able to put the app into the background and it still recording your run, even with just ‘While in use’ authorisation, I will try to include it in the next update.

Audio feedback is also something that will actively be worked on, since many people seem to have an interest in it.

In a future version there will probably also be ways to start a workout quicker, e.g. though a shortcut or widget.

In conclusion: You’re right, this app just came out and there will be many features added in the future.

Have a nice day,
Tim.

Good app but missing one critical feature at this time.

I'm reserving judgment on this app until I've used it more but the major plus (beyond its pay-once, no ads, clean design) that's made me put my £1.99 down for it is the on-device only data. If it works well enough, I'll be switching away from my current, privacy invading and potentially leaking my home and work address to the world app of choice ASAP.

However, there are two features that are missing for me at the moment that prevent me from doing so - the first being one that I can't live without:

1. Audio announcements of distance and time travelled, and pace per km, particularly for running (while simultaneously also being able to listen to your music or podcast apps of choice).
2. The ability to filter the timeline by kind (cycling, running, walking). Filtering by 'race' as has just been added in v.1.1 is irrelevant to me as my activities are personal fitness, not competitive.

A third feature that would pretty much cover 99% of my needs when added to the other two above is weekly/monthly/yearly summaries of all/by kind activities.

Update: Thanks for the reply Tim. I've found that, in the meantime, I'm able to use my other app at the same time (so I can get the announcements) while trying OutRun to see how well it functions. I'd obviously be very keen to stop using the other app as soon as I can for privacy reasons.

Developer Response ,

Hey,

Glad you like the app so for.

These features should come in the near future. I’m pretty much working on the app around the clock now, but it might still take some time until the update gets release, since it needs to be coded and then tested thoroughly.

Best regards,
Tim.

Loving the app but needs some features.

Hello I am loving this app but I feel it needs a few major features.

1. Csv or pdf file format for export. I cannot view the gpx file format on my iPhone. Please add more export file formats as it will be much easier to view share and export files.

2. iCloud sync with other devices. I have a second iPhone I would like to have all my data auto sync across devices. I am not talking about data backup or Apple Watch sync.

3. iPad support with iCloud sync. It would be amazing if you could make a iPad version and all data sync via iCloud from iPhone to iPad. I use my iPhone for tracking the exercises, viewing all data, organisations and exporting all my data on a brighter screen. This is how I use other apps tracking recording data and then using iPad to view add notes etc and then get all that data ready for exporting.

Please consider these features especially file format export options. Thanks and I will look forward to the updates.
