Good app in general

App works well for its primary purpose of getting messages from the school. The login pin is a bit of a pain and could be done better, or allow us to turn it off - not sure why the app needs its own pin. Also concerned that the payment section doesn't provide any indication of security. For
Example when paying with paypal it doesnt seem to allow autocomplete like it does in the safari browser. No way to know for sure its paypals website you’re logging into. Maybie this should open out to the browser to complete the payment rather than essentially putting paypal in some sort of iframe.

Hello Steve. Thanks for the rating and the detailed feedback - we really appreciate constructive feedback. We will make a note of your comments re the payments window. Regarding the PIN, it is optional and you can switch it off via the Settings option on the application menu.

Frustrating niggles make the app annoying.

If the school offers parents evening on 2 dates and you book an appointment on one date it constantly shows a notification that you need to book an appointment. The app thinks you need an appointment on both dates. The constant notification is annoying. Other reviewers have commented this is the same for forms that you don't need to respond to because you aren't taking up the event offered. Even if you move the item to the archive the notification persists.

The second frustration is that despite having the app and having push notifications there is no way to turn off emails or SMS. Consequently I get a summary email everyday that something has been sent to the app - even though I have read it in the app. I get an SMS and this is then duplicated in the app as a new notification.

ParentMail need to sort it out so that items in the archive don't generate notifications and have a way to turn off emails and SMS if you are receiving push notifications from the app.

Frustrating issues which cannot be too difficult to fix

This app is a great idea but just seems like the implementation needs some work. My complaints have been registered by many other people on the App Store reviews (which seems the only way to contact the developers by the way). I will reiterate my issues anyway.

Firstly notifications by email. There should be an option to turn off notifications by email, or at the very least register that I have read something in the app and then realise that I don’t need an email notification which says exactly the same thing again. We’re all busy and don’t appreciate getting unwanted emails.

Secondly notifications that will not go away. I want the app to notify me of messages and I want unread messages to appear as a badge on the app but there needs to be a way to ignore a notification so the app badge disappears. Examples include forms which do not need to be filled in and notifications to pay into a lunch money account when my child gets free school meals.

You may well think that these small niggles don’t warrant a two star review and to be fair the app generally seems to do what it is supposed to, but when every interaction with the app is seasoned with a little bit of annoyance and frustration at not being able to adequately edit the notifications, it all builds up and I end up feeling less generous. If there was any other way to contact the developer perhaps these frustrations could be vented differently.

Developer Response ,

Hello and thank you for your review.

Email notifications are sent at the same time as push notifications, which means you'll receive both. Unfortunately, once the message has bean read within the app, there is no way of re-calling the email that has already been sent. ou can change your notification settings so that you receive a notification instantly, or to receive a summary of your notifications. If you would like to change this, select Settings > Notification Settings in your app.

The notifications are designed to let you know that new items are available - whether this is an email, an item available to purchase, or a form to fill out, and these can be cleared by viewing the item.

We are open to all suggestions and we encourage you to email us at feedback@parentmail.co.uk if you have any comments or questions.
