Photon Pro is a video noise reduction Plug-In for Final Cut Pro X
Photon Pro uses a sophisticated algorithm to remove sensor readout noise and photon shot noise from digital movie recordings.
Eliminate the ugly 'film grain' and make your clips look great!
- An incompatibility issue has been reported with the Mac Mini 2011 and the Radeon 6630 HD graphic card.
- Make sure you select 'create optimized media' when importing a clip otherwise the program will be forced to use software-only rendering which is very slow.
Inspired by the leading photographic editing applications, Photon Pro allows you to do interactive editing with ease and speed.
The plug in enables you to set different level of correction for the luminance and the chrominance channels.
Both spatial and temporal denoising are supported, as well as mixed-mode spatial and temporal.
Photon Pro has been designed to preserve edge sharpness while removing noise.
If you intend to use a sharpening filter in your effects chain, make sure that such filter is applied downstream from (after) the noise reduction filter.
Photon Pro will take full advantage of the new Mac Pro (late 2013) dual GPU architecture.
A recent and fast OpenCL 1.2 compatible graphic card is highly recommended to achieve the best performance.
Limited time intro price.
Requires Apple Final Cut Pro X 10.1.3
-Resolves an issue with Temporal Radius set to zero on some Radeon HD cards
Ratings and Reviews
massive potential but limited
It actually works really well, and there are plenty of options to adjust noise reduction in several key areas. My biggest cavaet, and sadly its a big one. It will only task a single core when its rendering, which makes the more intensive, useful settings rather useless. We use several Mac Pro machines with 12/24 threads and to have it trundle through 1 hour files in slower than real time means it is almost useless especially when there are many more cores idling when they could be used
If the author wants more money, make a PRO version and use all free cores or at least 8 if free. The end results are good, but too slow for any kind of serious or semi serious project.
Just what the doctor ordered
For the money it’s a complete no-brainer. First things first though regarding the other reviews 1) of course it takes a while to render, noise reduction (especially if it’s intelligent) is one of the most intensive processes there is 2) it’s not true that it only uses 1 cpu core - it doesn’t use any… it offloads the processing to your graphics card which is why it clearly states you need to appy to “optimised footage” - easy enough, find the clip in your bin, right click and select “Transcode Media” and tick “create optimised media”. On my system with a 7950 graphics card (yes, it’s a Hackingtosh, what else…) it could almost play real time with simple setting, though to be fair as soon as you ask it to do some serious work you will have to render - but that’s to be expected for this type of plugin.
Bottom line, I had some footage for use in a “professional” (paying) job that was much more noisey than I would have liked and certainly wouldn’t have been acceptable to the client and now it’s fixed and everyone is happy :) And even more importantly for me it took me 10 seconds to work out the settings I needed for each clip rather than half an hour experimenting. Like I say, for the money it’s a no brainer...
Effective but slow
When it works this does a good job, but it takes forever and making alterations to the settings after the initial pass takes just as long. Fine for the odd tweak of a short clip; otherwise be prepared to take long breaks when you use it.
