Great App for families
Have used for several specimens now and am very impressed.
The quality of the photo has to be quite high to get a good identification, however, so perhaps not good enough for a serious entomologist. Luckily, my wife is a good photographer and the images she can produce with her iPhone XR are for fine for when we’re out with the kids and we want a quick ID.
Incredible
First of all, you do not need to pay, whatsoever. It will offer you a subscription, but you do not to accept. Just click cancel and it will get rid of it. The description is mostly precise and results are almost always correct. And let’s not forget to mention the incredible AI. If you are unsure of anything, just click on the robot icon in the bottom left corner. He can help you with anything. An app appropriate for parents trying to answer kids question of ‘what insect is that?’ , people wondering if an insect is harmless or not and insect enthusiasts. Download it now!
Beware of the click-through
Beware the app starts with a splash screen advert which must be dismissed by clicking CONTINUE followed by a second advert which must be dismissed by clicking CONTINUE followed by a third screen which must be dismissed by clicking CONTINUE except the last CONTINUE signs you up to a 7-day free trial with an automatic paid subscription. There is a light grey on light background (almost invisible) link to continue with a limited version of the app. Of course you can cancel the subscription within 6 days to avoid being charged but just beware.
Also when I tried to identify a beetle it failed and suggested some very inappropriate possibilities but YMMV.
Overall not very impressed. Not nearly as good as PlaneNet (plants) or Cornell (birds).
