"A gem of an app I guarantee will live on my phone for quite some time, and I suspect that’ll be true for you other iOS device-carrying folks as well." -

Rhythm Calculator is for any musician. Whether you are just starting to learn an instrument, practising more advanced pieces, or have been composing for years, this is the app for you. For music teachers, this is a valuable teaching aid and can help improve the quality of your students’ practice sessions.

Rhythm Calculator allows a musician to quickly and easily input a complicated section of musical notation and hear it played back in perfect time and tempo. Learning the relationship of notes through manual input and visual highlighting will improve your sight-reading skills. Slow the rhythm right down to practice that tricky passage. Save the rhythm for a future practice session. A great tool to have in your pocket!

With a simple and familiar calculator-style user interface, inputting rhythm is a breeze. Hit the ‘=‘ button to hear the rhythm played back repeatedly so that you can play along.

- Note and rest values up to 1/128 (Semihemidemisemiquaver)
- Simple and compound time signatures
- Tied notes
- Note articulation
- Multiple dotted rhythms
- Any complex or nested tuplet
- 25 melodic and 16 percussive realistic instrument sounds

Great, but some suggestions

This is an incredibly useful and versatile app, and I was very pleased to find this. I wish I had found it sooner, as I regularly work with odd rhythmic groupings. When you come up against one you're not sure about, it can be very difficult to work it out. This app jumps to the rescue, and let's you hear the rhythm with the pulse and allows you to internalise it.

I do have some suggestions, however, to improve the user experience.

1. Introduce a "keep screen on" feature. I have found that, when practising along to a rhythm, the iPad auto lock activates and silences the app. I would like to be able to have the app keep the iPad open without having to change the settings on my iPad.

2. Enable us to change the default sounds. Every time you create a new rhythm, the sound defaults to a grand piano for the rhythm playback, and a hi-hat for the pulse. You then need to manually navigate a long list to change the sound. I would like to be able to select the default sounds for new rhythms.

3. Pulse marker - it would be very useful to introduce a feature that visually marks the beat, which coincides with the audio cue.

4. Stability improvements. I have experienced a few crashes within the first few minutes of use. iPad retina, iOS 8.

Overall, a great app that will become a regular part of my practice. With the improvements, and maybe a slight graphical facelift (it isn't the best looking app around and the interface is a little clumsy), it would be a true 5 star app.

Don't buy!

Obviously an abandoned app that hasn't been updated in donkeys years! Tried to use triplets but no matter what I did, there was no hope.

Even their website is not working, so no way of contacting for support.

Don't waste your time.

Rubbish - doesn't work

This App loads but as soon as you press a button it crashes and freezes. Complete waste of money.
