Description

RSS Menu is a systemwide menu that allows you to read and organize your favourite RSS, Atom and/or JSON feeds.

The articles are automatically updated and you will get a notification when new articles are available or when some other event occurs. In addition to visual notification, you can also enable speech notification and choose one of the many built in voices.

Key features include:

- easy to use RSS browsing with systemwide menu
- very fast parsing engine
- auto detects if a url has one or more feeds
- importing and exporting of OPML files
- many options to customize the menu
- support for saving articles for offline reading
- support for grouping feeds in submenus and adding separators
- support for favourite icons (aka page icons)
- supports RSS, Atom and JSON feeds

What’s New

Version 3.3.1

- fixed an issue that could cause RSS Menu to use a lot of memory
- fixed a bug when exporting to an OPML file
- fixed a bug when importing an OPML file
- fixed a bug that would not update the UI when importing an OPML file
- significantly reduced the amount of memory and CPU usage

Seems to be working again!

Having complained about a previous update being buggy and consistently crashing at launch, the current version (3.1.4) seems to be working properly once more.

So in fairness to the author, I'm updating my review to reflect that. What's good? Fairly easy to use, not at all expensive, and once more, will send all the unread RSS articles straight to Safari with a single mouse click. This makes checking up on your favourite blogs a breeze.

On the flip side, RSS Menu is now an application and doesn't appear in the menubar after the application is closed. I miss being able to see RSS feeds fron the menubar alone.

But that's a small price to pay for having what's really a very useful utility back up and running.

Developer Response ,

You can turn RSS Menu into a background only app. Check the preferences to change that.

Lost Feeds

I've used this app for years and I really like it. There is a significant problem with this upgrade, however. When I installed it on my MacBook pro it forgot all my feeds. Fortunately I had exported them to iCloud before I upgraded. Unfortunately any attempt at re-importing them resulted in the app siezing up. Needs some work

Developer Response ,

Version 2.5.1 fixes the missing feeds.
Version 2.6 has been submitted for review and fixes all bugs and has some other enhancements.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

Could be an invaluable app

I've already given this app a positive review, but I'm going to have to adjust my score downward for recent versions. Every time I restart my computer, all the feeds get marked as unread and any new feeds I added have vanished.

The developer has added many features that I never use, but that have nonetheless had a negative impact on my experience. The menu has become more jumbled and the feed headlines break in odd ways, making the menus take up much more space than necessary. New features are great, so long as they don't get in the way and don't break basic functionality like adding new feeds and keeping track of unread items properly.

There's an opportunity here for a developer who creates a simple, one-thing-well, RSS menu reader.
