Outstanding - 500 Runs Clocked Up
I downloaded Runkeeper a very long time ago. Since then I’ve clocked up nearly 500 runs of varying distances up the pinnacle in April, of the London Marathon. I’m not a serious runner but like to go out a minimum of twice a week, and then occasionally give my self some proper challenges. Last month I did a 27km hill race in Sorrento but normally it is 5km to 8km stuff, may 10km to 12km if the weathers right at the weekend. Over the years I’ve seen lots of different alternatives to Runkeeper and I always keep coming back. I’m on the free version, which does all I need. Maybe one day I’ll treat myself to the subscription! Honestly, I love this app. It’s ideal for what I want and need and now provides a terrific diary of the many hours and wonderful places I’ve shuffled my tired old legs along!

What’s this Stopwatch thing that has just turned up?!
I’ve been using Runkeeper for a number of years in the free mode. I used to use it to record my running times and distances, plus my times and distances when walking the dogs. I now mainly use it just for walking the dogs as I have invested in a TomTom watch for running (which isn’t great, but it fits on your wrist so you don’t have to carry your iPhone). Anyway, today I’m on holiday and didn’t have my TomTom watch so went for a run using Runkeeper on my iPhone. I changed the activity from walking to running and it pops up with a new “stopwatch activity”. I’ve never seen this before, but I think it looks correct because I wand to record my time and it could be that otherwise it would do that stupid “pause” thing when you are at traffic lights. Once I got back from my run it ask me to enter the distance I had run???! I think to myself “you’ve got the GPS, not me”. So, the stupid thing hasn’t recorded the distance. Rubbish!
Also, how do you turn the volume down before it blurts out “Activity Started” at full volume when you start?
Come on Runkeeper, get the basics right before doing all the bells and whistles – it used to be a pretty good app.
Relied on having my AppleWatch and iPhone in sync
Runkeeper has never been the best running app, however having said that I’ve had it for years and it has done the job. The training plans are great and got me through my first marathon last year.
The recent update has caused me major problems though, hence this review. I relied on my phone for music and audio cues when running, and loved that my Apple Watch watch simply acted as a heart rate monitor and external display. I’ve now last that ability.
If I want to use just the watch, I can’t then use my phone for audio (music/podcasts) and lose the audio cues!
There are also a few other issues i have with the watch and displays.
1) I do a lot of interval training and I need to know my average pace during the interval. The only options I have on the display are current pace or average pace, which are both useless for interval/tempo workouts. Please provide an option to display average interval pace.
2) the splits and chart analysis is just lacklustre. Please take cues from MapMyRun. Ya runners love looking at data, even if it’s meaningless!
3) constant issues with the training plan. Sometimes the ‘this week’ tab just fails to load and I’ve even had my entire plan deleted.
It’s a good app, but given how long it’s been on the market and it’s maturity, I think you need to step your game up, to avoid losing customers.
