Integral planning tool for my sailing in UK waters
I have used Savvy Navvy since practically it was available. The idea - to develop Google Maps for sailors - is brilliant and the app works very well. Insert a start point, some waypoints and an end and Savvy Navvy will calculate the optimal route including wind predictions and tide. Press a button and export a gpx file to your chartplotter (if the latter can import them...).
This app is still being developed and new releases with new features and enhanced functions appear regularly. The development team is very responsive on feedback.
I give it a 5 out of 5, but for transparency I also must disclose that I have invested a small sum during Savvy Navvy‘s recent funding round.
Not quite as good as it first might seem
The potential for Savvy Navv as a passage planning tool is considerable. It’s drawbacks are that it simply does not (yet) have all the information needed for its use as an onboard navigation app. There is, for example, no facility to view light or mark characteristics, and no tidal height information, or means of plotting position lines that are not part of a route.
Given, therefore, that other apps will be required if navigation is being done electronically, Savvy Navvy is not a complete solution. You will still need a tidal height almanac a nautical almanac and a plotter app. That would be fine other than the pricing of Savvy Navvy being pitched as if it does the lot. Nearly £100 just for an offline passage planner is just too much. And as the Basic Plan relies on constant connectivity, that’s not much use either despite its lower cost.
In summary, a good idea, bags of potential but not yet either complete or realistically priced. Really responsive support though and really nice visuals etc. I wish them well but it is not right for me or responsible navigators looking for a complete package (yet).
A great passage planning tool and more
Great to see the app now available and even easier to use than the website I have used for a long time now, since the earliest days of its availability. So mush better to access this directly on my iPad.
The concept is great and the execution even better as the range of additional features continues to grow - now with weather and tide information included it really becomes a “one-stop shop” or, at the very least and more likely, a “must go to” when planning a route or looking at options and background information.
