Description

Typewriter. Corkboard. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.”
- Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith

GROW YOUR MANUSCRIPT YOUR WAY
Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener lets you break up your writing into sections as small or large as you like. At its heart is a simple ring-binder metaphor—gather material and switch between writing, notes and research with ease. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Compose your text in any order you want—write when inspiration strikes and find its place later.

SEE THE FOREST *OR* THE TREES
Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: hammer out every last detail before typing a word, or carve out a draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are integrated with an easy-to-use project outline, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

RESEARCH WITHIN REACH
Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right alongside what you’re working on. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Or check for consistency against an earlier chapter.

GETTING IT OUT THERE
Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, turn your manuscript into a beautiful ebook or PDF, export to Word, or simply print it out. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

Scrivener’s users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won’t tell you how to write—it just provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing.

What’s New

Version 3.3.6

• Fixed a 3.3.5 bug whereby only the first footnote on each page was included when printing or exporting to PDF.
• Reinstated the Auto-Completion settings from 3.3.3 and earlier. These had been temporarily removed to work around a crash on Sonoma.
• Fixed a bug whereby “Style to” in the script settings may not work correctly when tabbing after typing was set to insert only a tab.
• Restored the PDF/X-1a option for PDF export, having addressed the crash this was causing on Intel machines running Big Sur.
• Other minor bug fixes.

Perfect for writing a novel!

I was writing a novel in Apple Pages and found myself keeping notes about current chapters in bullets at the bottom of the file, or in other note-taking apps, or in separate Pages files, along with things like character descriptions. It was messy at best, and required me to keep scrolling around for notes in the manuscript document itself or in other files. Scrivener keeps everything in one place. Notes for a current chapter/scene can be side by side with the text itself as you write, which is great. And the app itself works really well. Not only is the interface extremely well thought-out, things like keeping the text in standard RTF files instead of some hidden proprietary format is great, and reassuring should the Scrivener file itself become corrupted — you can still get your text out. And of course the ability to split chapters/scenes into seperate sections to work on is great, and something I couldn't do with Pages, unless I wanted to create completely separate .pages files. Everything feels far more manageable and productive using Scrivenver and I highly recommend it for writing a novel!

Game Changer

I write fiction in an attempt to earn my stripes to become a novelist. (Not yet giving up the day job!).
I've always used MS Word and it has been fine. Scrivener V2 didn't look polished and I was content with Word. However, Scrivener V3 is a at a whole different level and a boon to any writer. So many features and analytics, so much information at your fingerips, so easy to flick beteen scenes, chapters, other works, that I realised just how limiting working with Word had been. With a huge number of tutorials and videos available on the web I don't need to go into any great detail here, when you can get it from the experts. Customer support is excellent, and I can't imagine using anything else to help organise and compile my works. Total fan.

An ordered system for an ordered mind

Update: Just completed my second book in Scrivener. It's been so much better than mucking around with WP and files all over the place. Well worth the investment.

Outstanding support when you've got a problem.

---------------------------------------------------

I took up writing as a hobby after I retired. Short stories are my thing, but I might venture into a novel one day.

Originally, I used Apple Pages and the Mac filing system to order my work and research notes. This is fine, but requires a lot of tracking to keep everything in order, so I found that I was also using spreadsheets to make notes of progress and why I had collected stuff (stuff!).

Scrivener provides a complete method to do all of this, and more tools than the average writer will need in a lifetime. I've synthesised what I need from it, which is by no means everything, and set up template projects tuned to my short story format.

I can now produce a camera-ready document to go straight to the printer (which I've done - a print of 50 copies!), and will eventually have a go at eBook publishing.

So I'm happy.

Scrivener 3 has one or two niggles, partly because it offers so much functionality, and the helpdesk response can be quite slow, even for basic problem solving. But it's a much better working environment for writing than anything else I've used.
