Description
A breakthrough electronic book about our Solar System, offering hours of interactive exploration and presenting a treasure trove of visual information.
Bestselling author Marcus Chown leads us on a grand tour through the incredible diversity of planets, moons, asteroids, comets and spacecraft that surround the Sun in our cosmic backyard. Illuminating his insightful and surprising text are a wealth of beautiful 3D objects, movies, images, animations, and diagrams, all fully interactive, richly detailed and accurately based on real scientific data.
Set the heavens in motion in an interactive orrery that allows you to control the orbits of the moons and planets, observing them from any viewpoint with breath-taking surface detail. View the latest imagery returned by both manned and robot spacecraft, beautifully presented on the iPad screen. Then double-tap any astronomical object to jump directly to its chapter in the interactive book.
Solar System for iPad is the result of a collaboration between Touchpress (creators of The Elements) and Faber & Faber (London’s greatest independent publisher). It raises the bar yet again on what an interactive book can be. A perfect gift for anyone with an iPad: Solar System allows the imagination to roam free from Mercury to Pluto and beyond.

Reviews:
“There is so much to this application that I can only begin to the scratch the surface on its offerings. As with The Elements the content and presentation truly make learning fun and inspiring.”
- WIRED Magazine
“The new Solar System for iPad app is an amazing and extraordinarily attractive resource for amateur astronomers... an out-of-this-world digital book that is as informative as it is beautiful. It’s a stellar example for other reference app makers on how to best take advantage of the tablet medium.”

Ratings and Reviews
Glossy and informative, could be more interactive for my taste
Solar System has lots of information and very good, clear images. It's easy to navigate. This feels to me like a very glossy book - it's from the same people as The Elements and has a similar approach (i.e. you can rotate the image).
It is worth using the link to Wolfram Alpha - you can dig much deeper into the information on each planet by connecting through to that database.
I compared with Solar Walk which costs less, has less information and to my taste is less visually beautiful, but is more interactive and feels much more like a trip into space as you can navigate around the system, see orbiting satellites etc. In Solar System, you navigate mostly around chapter headings.
You can also try NASA for free - less glossily published, but with masses of information.
Solar system
Earth is spinning in the wrong direction - it’s turning to the west when it should be turning towards the east.
Buy Solar Walk 2 instead
I recently downloaded the Solar System app and I'm thoroughly disappointed to find it crashes as often as it does. Especially when I tap on the song, sometimes it plays, most often the app just freezes. On the rare occasion the app does play the song it then returns to the menu that's become totally unresponsive! I have to shut down the app every time with it. Not something anyone expects for a £10 app! (I'm using the app on the new 9.7" iPad Pro with the latest iOS installed)
Also, whilst this app does contain the key facts the presentation for that information is decidedly lacking; I find I still have to consult the far cheaper and better designed Solar Walk 2 app when this one should contain everything for the price!
