Description
Spaceward Ho! is a strategic game of awesome scope. You control the entire military and economy of a spacefaring race. Your goal: explore and colonize the galaxy.
Unfortunately, you are not alone. Alien enemies bent on galactic conquest will oppose your expansion. You fight them by developing new technologies and expanding your empire, or you can ally with them to turn enemies into friends.
Terraform newly discovered worlds or mine their natural resources. Maneuver your starship fleets, both in defense of your own systems and in offensive strikes against the evil aliens. Your strategic decisions will determine the fate of the galaxy.
Based on the original Mac/PC/Palm game and updated for iOS.

Great game which locks you in
Once you get the mechanics of the game and start from ever more difficult starting points, games can keep you busy all night. Good for the unemployed and strong willed. Perhaps the most enduring of the games I ever bought.
It really needs the network play like the Mac version (local network only) or even better - multiplayer over the web even though this would be a bit of work to achieve with move servers and user management, and if this meant having to monetize features I think it would be a bad thing. If it could be done with a form of VPN connection then servers may not be needed - just each others phone numbers.
An old favourite in 64-bit
There are a few apps that I'd be sad to lose in the move to 64-bits. And there are one or two I'd really miss. Spaceward Ho! is one of the latter. I've played this for a number of years - initially on the Mac and later on iOS. It is an easy game to pick up and play, but the computer opponents offer a good level of challenge - particularly when you are juggling supplies of metal and money. The graphics are simple but effective, and seeing the new ship designs is always a pleasure. And you can configure so many things to get just the setup you want.
If you haven't tried this game you really should give it a shot.
Awesome
It shows what a long way that Apple has come in expanding its user base that this game is not topping the app store rankings: how could any one that played it on System 7 or before resist downloading?
However, it shouldn't be restricted to veterans - it is an excellent iOS game in its own right.
