This app is a speaker polarity tester. Find out if your speakers are wired correctly (in phase or out of phase). Test your surround speakers, stereo speakers, PA speakers, in fact any speaker with wiring terminals on the back.
This speaker polarity tester was designed by the same people who built the Audio Toolbox, and the polarity tester in that unit was known as the most accurate and reliable polarity tester available. Now that technology is available in your iPhone.
Use this app to test your home speakers, recording studio monitors, or as part of your professional contractor work. Speakers wired backwards are the most common error in sound system setup, cause big problems, and are easily corrected. This app will give you the answers, no matter how difficult the wiring may be to trace.
Speaker Pop works by watching for a proprietary "pop" sound from the speaker, and doing DSP analysis of the sound to determine if the speaker cone is moving in the correct direction.
As long as you use a standard 1/8" stereo plug, you can use any normal 1/8" to RCA adapter to get the signal into your system. You can also to record the "pop" test signal to a CD, DVD, or another iPod, and play this signal through your speakers.
Works with iAudioInterface and iTestMic.
Select the speaker type filter, Woofer, Midrange, or Tweeter. This selects either a 125Hz, 500-2000Hz, or 8000Hz filter, to make the readings more reliable.
Once you have the test signal coming out of the speaker, position your phone near the speaker (we suggest you flip it over to point the internal mic directly at the speaker -- the display will flip). In a few seconds you will get the reading on the screen, either a Plus or a Minus. Plus indicates correct speaker polarity, Minus means you need to swap the wires coming into the speaker.
We also have stereo and surround test signals available for download from our web site which are ready for burning to CD or DVD. See our web site or for more information. Note that iDVD will not burn encoded surround files, a more advanced DVD burning authoring program is required. Some folks have had success with Toast. We also sell test DVDs on our web site.

So simple with the right tools
What a great app !! I have an amp with 2 speakers on each channel and I’ve been noticing a drop in bass.
I assumed I’d blown a woofer (don’t lend your PA to friends !!) and was getting ready to replace it or maybe even get new speakers but had a nagging doubt that maybe I had wired the speakon connector incorrectly & therefore one speaker was out of phase.
Downloaded the app and within 2 mins had diagnosed & confirmed my suspicion.
Now they sound great !! Saved me money.
P.S Best way would be to download on to 2 devices. One as source for the all important sample tone & the other as diagnostic tool.
It works !!!
I sat months thinking something is up with my car audio installation and and not happy with my music, with all my friends telling me it's just In my head. I ran this app to discover my rear left speaker is out of phase (-) with all the other speakers (+). It wasn't in my head, I have ears as good as science lol, which is what this app is, to confirm for sure the polarity :) I simply plugged in via usb cable to my alpine headunit and played the sound in the app to the speaker (use fader and balance settings on your head unit to do one speaker at a time) one the pop is playing out of a single speaker simply place the phone microphone facing the speaker and you will get the reading. I was surprised it was able to play the tone and use the microphone at the same time, a lot of apps don't let you do this, this does however saving you effort of having to burn anything to a cd/usb stick.
The readings are correct because I also did an online phase test, which uses audio files that you listen to in phase and out of phase versions and that also confirmed to me that the speakers are out of phase, I knew I had to swap wired around for one of my rear speakers to get them matching phase, but I didn't know which one, then this app told me that my rear left speaker Is negative polarity and all my others are on positive. I switched wires on the left speaker and I am a happy camper now, the music sounds right now :)
I'm no audio expert but knew my newly supplied van speakers and wiring should have sounded a lot better, which got me looking into phasing and then this app. Worked perfectly for me and identified quickly that the left speaker wiring was supplied incorrectly so this was rectified and now sounds a lot better. 👍
