Great to play these Speccy classics with more to come. The app is superb, works with the iCade, a very polished product. Top marks to the dev Jon Needle. One of the best apps i've got. Don't listen to the review by ginger tips. Obviously doesn't understand how it works! Doesn't have a clue about games as most were games from back in the day and others are great new homebrew onesPlus now you can also add your own games !!!

  • Fantastic work by Mr. Needle

Varied and reasonably priced game selection - something for everyone. Controller supported for those not so familiar with touch screen joysticks, and a straightforward UI. Pretty much perfect. I have only one suggestion - please get some more licences sorted (Codemasters, System3, Ocean, Hewson… the list goes on). I guarantee there are many of us out here who want to play ZX Spectrum games legally on iOS, supporting the rights of the original devs and/or publishers, and we’re willing to pay a few quid for the privilege!

  • Great but for a couple of things.

A great app, especially with the ability for loading in slow (normal) or fast speed. However, there are some things which could be improved upon. While it is possible to get the 128k basic and 48k basic modes it is rather hampered by the fact there is no easy delete key; which could be included easily surely? Also while it is possible to get the classic screen up (with tape loader, calc etc) it isn't possible to scroll on these and use them. It would also be rally great to be able to load games that I already have so that I can play these too. This is possible with the PC version of Spectaculator, so why not via this version? Ok I understand that it might be down to the fact that the games would not be easy to put onto the IPod, but, hopefully this will be possible in the future? Thank you. Look forward to updates to the app soon!

  • At last!

An emulator on iOS that finally works. Good spread of initial games. Excellent use of touch screen for Tau Ceti and the controls are certainly the best I've seen so far (compared to iDOS, C64 and ZXEC). The addition of the tip-store and ability to enter poke's is a great feature and the inclusion of original instructions as well as tips are well appreciated, bringing back very fond memories. If the games are continually updated and at a decent price, there's no reason for this not to be in any retro-heads collection. It would be nice to be able to customise control transparency and position. Obviously it would be great to be able to add other .TAP games using iTunes, the only problem being key assignment and copyright infringement. All in all a fantastic effort and If other developers are looking for inspiration then look no further!

  • Great emulator - facility to load original tape games

I’ve been using speculator for quite a few years now on an off and I think it is possibly the very best spectrum emulator available, being an 80s teenager it’s a been a dream come true, with first the windows versions and now iPad &iphone. Great all around. But one thing I miss on the iPad version is being able to load original tape versions of games. Especially ones that aren’t available to download such as Knightlore and other “ultimate play the game” games. And I’ve noticed lately that this facility doesn’t work so well on the pc versions of speculator ether, which is a bit disappointing as it definitely used to. But otherwise fantastic stuff. Really like some of the newer games being created. Cool.

  • Lack of space for BASIC programs.

The main failing of this app. for me, is the lack of storage space for programs one might type in. Ok I know it’s really for playing Spectrum games but from an educational POV it would have been nice to be able to type in old BASIC programs, many of which are still available and still do a good job of introducing the novice to programming concepts, despite being a very out of date language. Life is not all about playing games but I guess they were thinking of the commercial side when designing this app. They knew many people would be more interested in playing games than programming. It’s a pity because it would have kept Spectrum BASIC alive and shown there is more to life than playing games.
