It’s good

It is good to keep track of what everyone owes though maybe it would be better to have an option to add change.

For example, if I pay for breakfast with a note and get change from that note, I should be able to put that in without having to add it to my total of what I owed. I think it just makes it easier to put in so that when others owe something specific you’re not having to remember how much change you got.

It’s easy for splitting equally but some people may have got more or less. Having to add each total of what someone owes as well as your own is a pain. Maybe if the person who has paid has their share autofilled when the totals from the others are input when splitting unequally. Just an idea, maybe I’m just bad at maths.

Free version is no use at all

Splitwise has recently made the free version unusable. You can only make 4 entries a day and have no access to analysis or currency conversion. I ended up keeping a copy of everything on Notes as a backup. Pointless. Not sure if this is an issue on the paid version but other annoying things: you can’t see a total spend for a group. You can see by expense type so I had to go and change loads of entries to make them all one expense type. It’s either that or use a calculator with your backup notes!! You can’t see who owes what across your group. Only what people owe you. Not everyone was using Splitwise in my group, as I was the overall controller. But I couldn’t see what person B owed person C. There’s loads of alternative apps like this. I’ll be trying one of them next as this one is useless. I wouldn’t try the paid for version - seems too risky to find out it doesn’t work effectively either.

Ok; but could be a lot better

This app is on the way to being very good. Easier to add members of a group and add in bills that need to be shared. However it needs 2 simple improvements to be as good as it should be as settling up is much more complicated than it needs to be.
First highlight whether a member of the group can be paid by PayPal and ideally which email address to use. Including how to settle up in a ‘help’ section would also be very useful.
Second I only expected to pay my net balance So for example I owe other group members £30; they owe me £16 so I expected to only pay out my net balance of £14. However the way settle up works means I have to pay out £30 and then wait for group members to pay me back the £16: not only does this add complexity and delay it also increases PayPal costs as you pay a %.
