Editors’ Notes
This wonderful platformer clearly takes inspirations from Super Mario World—and we’ve got absolutely no beef with that. But you know what? Our favorite parts of this game are wholly its own—the creative touch controls, the adorable cats and the loads of secrets hidden within each level.
Absolutely Perfect
A great example of an iOS platform game executed perfectly. From the adjustable sensitivity with the controls to details in the levels, this game is truly a gem. A good amount of care was put into this game and it really shows overall. The cute graphics and excellent level design prove the game to be worthwhile to play.
Most importantly, the advertisement in the game does not become an issue and it was not bothersome at all. This was a seller for me because most games try to annoy you with their adverts to squeeze your money out of you. Super Cat Tales did try to tell you their products in exchange for your money but did not force you to by restricting you in any way. Thus, the game is exemplary and something I hope other game developers can learn in order to ensure good, quality and playable free games that can be enjoyed.
Nailed it.
This feels a little like bite-sized SMB3, which is high praise considering how much I normally hate iOS platformers. Usually they're just bad ports of PC games with inferior controls. Games which you'll have a profoundly superior experience playing there. Steam versions of Thomas was Alone, VVVVVV, and many others just work better on PC.
For things to work well on iOS, you need to simplify and take the platform's limitations into account. You couldn't make Super Mario 3D World for an original NES, right? It lacks analogue controls, and there are too few buttons. So the controls, level design, and gameplay need to consider the format they're on.
If you're tired of clearly inferior ports with bad controls that ignore an iDevice's limitations? Try this. It's perhaps the only good iOS platformer. Other devs could learn from this. I hope they do.
