Why I Meditate, by Sebene Selassie
I don’t know what I’d do without a meditation practice.
These days, after many years, it’s a regular habit. But it wasn’t always that way. For years I tried to cultivate a regular practice, but I found it hard to stick to a routine. It was easier to hit snooze, or get up off my cushion before the timer went off, or skip the weekly gathering at the Zendo.
But I had an incentive: I was a hot mess.
I was in my mid-twenties and struggled with mood swings and anxiety. I was working with at-risk young people and grappled with the secondary trauma of their challenging lives. I was also in therapy processing my own family trauma. I had one failed romantic relationship after another. I constantly worried what everyone thought about me. And I partied… a lot.
Every time I meditated, I could feel its benefits. This was before the wave of research proving just how good it is for us. I figured it out from direct experience. After each meditation, I felt a little more grounded, a little more spacious.
I needed a lot of grounding and spaciousness in those days. I didn’t want to feel my sadness and fear. I knew they were there, and many times (especially when I was alone) I would even wallow in them. But wallowing didn’t mean I understood them. Almost everything I did was an attempt to get rid of those feelings, to not feel them. I was always busy: trying to improve myself or fight the system or have as much fun as possible. Most of it was an attempt to get away from how I felt inside…

Ratings and Reviews
I consider myself qualified to rate this app as I have probably tried more methods than most to crack meditation. This is my 3rd meditation app, I have done two online courses, signed up to countless 30 day guided introductions, read more than probably 10 books on the subject, been to workshops and mini retreats .... you get the picture. But in all of the various teachings I have come across before it has never been explained in such a beautifully simple way as by Joseph Goldstein aided by Dan’s illuminating questioning. Don’t miss the essentials with Joseph. Now I finally get how life changing meditation can be. Thank you Joseph and than you Dan for putting together this wonderful resource.
Meditation for beginners course.
I don’t like the way this course automatically and charges you in full after a free period without any further consultation within the period of the free trial.
To cancel and get your refund after 14 days is not a financially justifiable way of proceeding. As a result it has so annoyed me I have cancelled my subscription seeking a return of my £85. Until Apple sorts this practice out, I will withdraw my facility of paying because I’m feeling the whole activity is prone to fraudulent activity.
They should be asking as to whether they can take money from your iTunes account. A much more polite more likely successful route would be to have a click through to continue if the product was any good? Not to say I haven’t enjoyed some of the communication but if it is just a method of selling you more after taking £85 from your bank account then I think this should be changed so as not to ensnare the customer with Added stress and anxiety.
Developer Response ,

Best meditation app around
I think this app is the most practical of all the various ones around whilst also still maintaining the essential spiritual element of meditation, but without either factor being exclusionary for those who come down more on one side than the other. It is the first time some of the processes have truly sunk in for me on a deeper level and therefore had a hugely beneficial impact on my practice. Love it and look forward to using it each day 💖
Only slight criticism is around the price point - one of the most expensive ones around, whilst I realise quality comes at a cost, it can mean this is much less accessible for those on lower incomes.
