news as it should be given, factually, opinions as they must be given, cogently and without malice

I was saddened when the Independent disappeared from the newsstands, disappointed by the seeming loss of one of the UK’s only too-few liberal newspapers. But gloom turned to positive relief when I discovered that the Indie lives on in digital form, its bright, positive ethos intact, its reportage and analyses as sharp and incisive as ever, its features just as enlightening and entertaining. A bad read for reactionary types perhaps, still ruminating on the loss of Empire and what not, but a must-read for uninfected, unfettered minds eager to embrace the possibilities of a better, more inclusive future, when nations shall speak unto nations with more honesty and humane purpose and where lies and misinformation are seen for the poisons they always were. And if this sounds a mite overblown, just look at the pernicious garbage peddled across the board by many right wing media outlets and gauge how negative and depressing their narratives nearly always are and then compare them to the tenor of the stories you read in publications like the Independent, balms for the mind in troubling times and a tonic for the hope of a more enlightened tomorrow.

I have been with The Independent since day one in the 1980s. I have not missed a single edition, even finding them abroad on holiday, or catching up on my return home. I have been saddened to see excellent journalists leave, or been made redundant, and I was horrified when the paper edition ceased in 2016. Reluctantly, I moved over to the electronic edition, and understood the pressures that had made it necessary. I have seen a more Trans- Atlantic angle creep in recently,(understandable if your readership is greater now outside the UK), and I have been concerned about how ‘independent’ the newspaper is now, following various changes in ownership. There are less political pieces than in the past, and whilst ‘Voices’ occasionally has interesting articles, it is not an absorbing section. It is still an okay newspaper, but for me, it used to be essential, stimulating, independent and I was a proud reader. I think we have drifted apart and I shall probably let it go very soon. Sad, but there we are.

5* Content, limitations on older iPads

I have no complaints with the content and read thoroughly every day. Great, easy to use on a new device after struggling for a year or more on an older iPad 2 (16GB), comments below (and lack of 5th star) only apply to the smaller device.
The problem on the limited capacity device was that I had to delete eg Friday’s edition before downloading Saturday’s, and it needs 4-5 keystrokes to accomplish what should be a quick swipe. I only set auto delete to 7 days as I don’t know I’ve finished with an edition before the next one starts (and fails) to download. I also had to delete and reinstall the app monthly to overcome memory clutter, a one button means to do this would have been welcome.
