*** APPLE DESIGN AWARD WINNER 2017 ***

Meet the all-new Things! A complete rethinking of the original, award-winning task manager – with a perfect balance between simplicity and power, incredible new features, delightful interactions, and a timeless new design.

HERE’S HOW THINGS WORKS

If you’re new to Things, this is the basic workflow:

1. Collect Your Thoughts
Get things off your mind quickly with Things’ action extension – it lets you create to-dos from other apps. Or just talk to Siri on any device (“Remind me to...”) and import from Reminders.

2. Get Organized
Create a project for each of your goals, then add the steps to reach them. For clarity, add structure with headings. Then group your projects by areas of responsibility, such as “Family”, “Work”, or “Health”. Review these regularly to stay on top of things.

3. Plan Your Time
See your calendar events alongside your to-dos and plan your time effectively. Create repeating to-dos for things you do every few days, weeks, or months – Things will remind you on the right day.

4. Make the Most of Your Day
Every morning, grab a coffee and prepare your list for “Today”: review previously planned to-dos and make quick decisions on what to tackle. Pick some more steps from your projects and then get going. The Today list is the only place you’ll need to look for the rest of the day.

5. Customize Your Workflow
Use tags to categorize your to-dos or add context. For example, tag places like “Office” or “Home”, or tag all your “Errands”, or everything you’re working on with “Kate”. You can easily find everything you’ve tagged via filtering or search.

HERE’S WHY WE THINK YOU’LL LOVE THINGS

1. It stays out of your way.
As you start using Things, you’ll quickly notice how seamlessly all the features fit together to give you an uncluttered, focused experience. There are no unnecessary frills. No pointless gimmicks or useless controls. In fact, you’ll hardly notice the app – it’s just you and your to-dos.

2. Everything revolves around your to-dos.
In Things, each of your to-dos are special. In a list, they simply show a checkbox and the title of your to-do. But when you open them, they extend into a beautiful white piece of paper that’s ready to hold your thoughts. Additional details (checklists, tags, reminders, deadline) are nicely tucked away in the corner until you need them.

3. It’s got a touch of magic.
Things removes friction in magical ways. Take the new Magic Plus Button that lets you insert to-dos at any place in a list – simply via drag and drop. Or the ease at which you can multi-select and operate on many to-dos at once. Or the natural language date parser: just type “tomorrow”, “in 4 days” or “next Wednesday” and it will jump to all the right conclusions.

4. It’s got all the power of iOS.
Things is fully integrated with all the latest iOS technologies: Calendars, Siri & Reminders, Today Widget, Slide Over, Split View, Action Extension, Handoff, and Notifications.

5. And much more...
Everyone’s got their favorite feature, it’s impossible to list them all. See what our users love about Things – visit our website at: thingsapp.com

What’s New

Version 3.9.6

Things 3.9 is our big “Spring Cleaning” release – the culmination of months of work, with broad refactorings, architectural changes, and optimizations.

These major changes are all under the hood, so you should experience no difference in behavior.

But we have included some small usability improvements on iPhone and iPad as well:

• The app is significantly faster to launch, and also when opening a to-do, or tapping + to create a new to-do.
• The layout of collapsed to-dos is improved, particularly for smaller iPhones, so that more of the title is visible.
• Usability of the popover for setting dates has been improved to provide more clarity, especially when also setting reminders.

• Fixed a bug where the app could freeze after showing the welcome screen.

Editors' Notes

Everyone needs a task manager—and Things is adaptable enough for anyone. This Apple Design Award winner is crisp and lightweight, featuring a simple but effective interface. The ever-present Magic Plus button makes it easy to add to-do’s from anywhere in the app, and organising items is as simple as dragging them where you want them. It’s like the unicorn of productivity tools: deep enough for serious work, surprisingly easy to use and gorgeous enough to enjoy staring at.

Excellent but with a serious failing

I have used Things since its inception and Things 3 is a massive advance . But it has one major omission in my view. I appreciate the desire to make the look uncluttered but no longer being able to give entries a clear label showing degree of urgency is a serious step back. I used to be able to make many own customised flags and they showed clearly against each item. Yes you can still make them but all that shows is a generic tiny symbol indicating that there is a flag attached. Before Things 3 the flag would actually show so you could have “ Very Urgent” or “Urgent” clearly showing . Now I have to use a clunky workaround with the today/someday symbol. So we should have at least the option of the flag displaying. Apart from that, its superb.

Great app. Great design. Few niggles

After many years with the one of the biggest competitors to Things I recently decided to try out this version 3 and what a difference from previous versions and the competition.

The user experience clearly sits centre stage in the design which means that some of the functions that I would ideally like to see don’t matter quite as much because the app is so clear and quick to use, generally consistent and overall a joy in use that it keeps me more engaged and aware of what’s coming up.

I have found that I have a much clearer view of what needs to be done and due to built in flexibility I don’t have to go heavy with GTD methodology .. So I am actually doing more and playing less.

The only reason I don’t yet give 5 stars is due to the slightly odd way that repeat tasks work (maybe I just need to twist my mind out of my natural thinking / workflow) I would also like to see some small expansion of the filtering function to include ‘not’ capability.

If you are not managing multiple large and complex projects/ teams then this app is IMO a top option.

App pricing I think is appropriate on iOS, however the Mac companion cost is high and so the combined package (which is not offered as such) is a significant expense. I feel that a combo package of all 3 versions should be offered at some discount. This said, I am pleased that CC have steered away from subscription charging model 🙏🏻
