Topo GPS is a topographic mapping app. You can use it to plan routes and add points with customizable icons to the map. Created routes and points can be automatically synced with your iPhone via iCloud. You can try the app for free, but to use the app with the maps in the highest resolution, you need to purchase a map.

Good replacement for Viewranger
Now that ViewRanger isn't being developed anymore I started looked at the alternatives. I have some gpx files complex enough to crash many mapping Apps but TopoGPS loaded them without issue. TopoGPS has most of the features I want but isn't filled with useless bloatware like some. It does the basics of route planning and navigation well. The only issue (at that time) was they didn't offer a yearly subscription to UK Ordnance Survey maps, so it got a bit expensive. I approached the developers about adding that option and 2 weeks later they delivered! Great service! So far I'm finding TopoGPS a joy to use, and most importantly reliable. Of course it's not perfect and I would like to see more planning tools such as the option to split and join tracks/routes. Hopefully they will come but I'm still very happy with what TopoGPS offers right now.
Well Worth the Investment
I have been using this app for around 3 years and use it all the time to plan and find my way when I go walking. I love that you only buy what you need as you go so you can build your maps at your own pace. I have loads of routes planned and stored for future use. It has a record feature but I use other apps for that, but this app is super clear and easy to use for navigating.
This is an excellent app which I use on my iPhone XR but lately it keeps continually crashing. It is because impossible to use. I’ve invested a lot into the app so I’d really like to see this resolved. Thank you.
Marmite??
This map app can workout to be either expensive or cheap depending on your needs. Buy what you want or buy the whole lot for a reduced price. GPS works ok when there’s a signal (obviously). There’s a learning curve but the manual helps. Not the best but certainly not the worst. You may like it. Hidden costs mean you could end up paying over £20 for uk maps which would be ok if they weren’t more than a year or so out of date I suppose. I’m not that happy with the app to be honest and I wouldn’t rely on it to get me off a mountain.
Disappointing that some of the maps I have bought are not up to date. Roads and footpaths being out of date on maps that look like OS Maps is not very good.
It’s nothing that can’t be fixed.
