Discover award-winning journalism from a different type of newsroom. We don't focus on breaking news, but what's driving it. We're committed to open, inclusive journalism that gives everyone a seat at the table, and takes the time to go deeper on the stories that matter most.

Here's three reasons to try the Tortoise app:
- it's free via a 30-day trial, and was awarded Apple’s ‘app of the day’ three times in 2020
- access live editorial events, called ThinkIns
- access all of our journalism, including audio investigations, long reads and our daily email

Live editorial events – ThinkIns:
Get unlimited access to live, interactive events with extraordinary experts. Have your say alongside our editors and invited guests on a range of topics. Guests this year have included Lemn Sissay, Tony Blair, Nicola Adams, Greg James, Elizabeth Day, James O'Brien George the Poet, and many more.

Long reads and investigations:
Slow down and wise up with investigative journalism from Tortoise journalists and contributing writers. Tortoise brings focus to the Big Five forces shaping our lives: the 100-year life, wealth, belonging, new things, our planet.

Award-winning audio stories and podcasts:
Get our weekly podcast, the Slow Newscast, every week in the members' app. There's also the Editor's Voicemail – our co-founder James Harding's take on the week just gone. We're working on more podcasts for the coming months so watch this space.

Sensemaker email:
Our daily newsletter is delivered straight to your inbox or in the members' app. Clear, calm analysis on the stories that matter most right now. Get opinion and an inside take from contributing writers (we recently had Bill Gates write on vaccine distribution).

About us:
At Tortoise we take the time to investigate what’s really going on; to make sense of news, politics and the forces shaping our future. We don’t just report on slow stories – we care about what happens next. With your help, we want to understand the issues and spend time examining the ideas that will make for a better 21st century. Tortoise is built with and for our members and is driven by a collective desire to dive beneath the surface of the daily news.
Our mission is to create journalism that lasts. That means building a business model that’s responsible and sustainable. It means not being owned by a proprietor with an axe to grind. It means being independent of any political party or commercial agenda.
In short, it’s about belonging to something rather than just paying for it. We don’t take ads, and we’ll never sell your data.

Just one word - absolutely fantastic

Tortoise is just what I had been looking for. When you read a headline story, it is usually difficult to get the back story. What I like about Tortoise is that it covers the stories in depth and gives you the background to appreciate the story in its right context. I tried it because of Chris Cook. Chris Cook used to be on Newsnight and I was always liked how he covered the story. When he left Newsnight, I kept wondering where he had gone. When he turned up at Tortoise, I knew it would be something worthwhile and I was not disappointed. The aesthetics of the app is worth noting. It is minimalistic without any distraction, in keeping with the kind of focussed news they provide.

Sounds great ... Actually it is

I like the ideas behind ‘Tortoise’. Their response to the shallow frenzy of sound bites that characterize current news media, is to turn to carefully considered, well written analyses of the big issues that shape our lives and our world, and to hold ‘ThinkIn’ meetings that allow members and invited attendees to talk about ideas without resorting to ‘question time’ showcasing. It’s refreshing and welcome.

After signing up for the snow newsletter, which give access to some of the topics on offer, I was impressed enough to commit to membership. I am so glad I did.

A more considered and creative take on the world

Tortoise offers quality journalism that takes a step back from the daily news grind. It covers the issues, but with wider context and greater verve. The writing is of high quality and the audio essays are brilliant sound pictures. There could be improvements in the amount of quality photography on display, and the Today section of the app is a bit of a presentational mess. But none of that detracts from the fact Tortoise has become a must read (and listen).
