About us:
At Tortoise we take the time to investigate what’s really going on; to make sense of news, politics and the forces shaping our future. We don’t just report on slow stories – we care about what happens next. With your help, we want to understand the issues and spend time examining the ideas that will make for a better 21st century. Tortoise is built with and for our members and is driven by a collective desire to dive beneath the surface of the daily news.

Our mission is to create journalism that lasts. That means building a business model that’s responsible and sustainable. It means not being owned by a proprietor with an axe to grind. It means being independent of any political party or commercial agenda.

In short, it’s about belonging to something rather than just paying for it. We don’t take ads, and we’ll never sell your data.

A more considered and creative take on the world

Tortoise offers quality journalism that takes a step back from the daily news grind. It covers the issues, but with wider context and greater verve. The writing is of high quality and the audio essays are brilliant sound pictures. There could be improvements in the amount of quality photography on display, and the Today section of the app is a bit of a presentational mess. But none of that detracts from the fact Tortoise has become a must read (and listen).

Where are the articles?

I bought an annual membership based on the reviews and screenshots shown. It seemed exactly what I was looking for. However, the app seems to have an abundance of audio transcripts and little in the way of articles. Or maybe I can’t find them? I have issues with my ears, which makes it hard to use earphones, and I’m a little hard of hearing. So, the audio stuff (while an amazing thing for many people) doesn’t work for me. I wanted to read long-form articles that highlighted great journalism (how the app was sold to me). A little disappointed but I’m stuck with it now (no refunds or cancellations allowed) so I’ll keep trying and look out for the articles.

Sounds great ... Actually it is

I like the ideas behind ‘Tortoise’. Their response to the shallow frenzy of sound bites that characterize current news media, is to turn to carefully considered, well written analyses of the big issues that shape our lives and our world, and to hold ‘ThinkIn’ meetings that allow members and invited attendees to talk about ideas without resorting to ‘question time’ showcasing. It’s refreshing and welcome.

After signing up for the snow newsletter, which give access to some of the topics on offer, I was impressed enough to commit to membership. I am so glad I did.
