Description

Tunebook is now identical to the Tunebook for iPad application - don't buy both! I keep both on the App Store because it's not possible to provide an upgrade path to a single app without forcing some users to pay twice.

Tunebook is a viewer for music expressed in the ABC format. ABC is a simple text-based notation for music and many thousands of tunes are freely available in this format on the Web. ABC is also supported by many music applications. See http://abc.sourceforge.net/ for more details on the ABC format. The format is primarily geared towards traditional folk music where tunes fit on a single page.

Tunebook allows you to import files in the ABC format from websites into its database. You can then list the tunes, search for tunes by words in the title, by key and by time signature. Selecting a tune will display it in musical notation and allow you to play it in a variety of voices. You can also create tunebooks to organize your tune collection.

Tunebook is based on the well-known abc2ps and abc2midi applications, and licensed under the GPL. The source code is available from http://www.jhlabs.com/tunebook.

Exactly what I was looking for, and does it perfectly

I would have given Tunebook five stars except I can’t edit the abc: the keyboard gets in the way so I can’t see what I’m editing, and I can’t move the text behind it into view. But I wasn’t looking for an abc editor, I was looking for something that would let me import, view and play abc files and this app does it perfectly.

Already great, but missing key features

This app is instantly essential for me, and brilliant value at £1.19. I'm delighted.

I've quickly downloaded thousands of abc files including most of my must-haves. I've also experimentally entered new abc and found it easy. However, importing multiple tunes through the copy and paste interface reliably fails for me and I cannot navigate to the 'tune sharing web address' it gives. So it's hard to import abc that's not out on the web in plaintext.

Wishlist; more import options including importing from zipped abc files, midi support to improve the tinny playback, folders and other organisational tools for tunes (to sort into jigs, reels, mazurkas etc, or by country of origin), playback in the edit screen, flagging tunes as favourites, tunes I'm learning, and so on. Ability to delete individual The web browser is also very basic; it's normally easiest to navigate to the abc file elsewhere and then copy and paste the URL. And that's on the basis of an hour's play, so I'm sure there'll be lots more. Web forums or a contact address would be nice!

Really great app for musicians

This app plays abc notation from a variety of solid sources. Music can be slowed down and played on a wide array of instruments. I have it on ipad(s) and iPhone for one purchase price. Brilliant value.
