TunnelBear VPN is a free, incredibly simple app to browse the Internet privately and securely.

The beautiful TunnelBear app protects your online privacy, lets you access your favourite websites & apps, and secures your connection on public WiFi hotspots.

Try TunnelBear for free with 500MB of browsing data every month. No credit card required. In-app purchases available for premium plans, which give you unlimited data.

Put simply, by using TunnelBear you can browse from anywhere with peace of mind knowing that your online activity is more private from hackers, ISPs, and advertisers.

TunnelBear VPN for iOS is a really simple app that encrypts your web browsing and data (making it unreadable) as it leaves your iPad or iPhone. It makes public Wi-Fi safe and secure, and also keeps your browsing private from ISPs. Websites and advertisers will have a more difficult time tracking your physical location and browsing across the Internet.

Your browsing habits are personal and shouldn't be trusted to just anyone. TunnelBear is proud to be the first VPN service in the world to be independently audited by a 3rd party. You can feel confident that we deliver on our promise to secure your data.

• One-tap connect: App so simple, a bear could use it
• Trustworthy: Along with a strict no-logging policy, we're the only consumer VPN app to have completed a 3rd party, public security audit
• No logging. Your browsing stays private
• Grizzly-grade security: TunnelBear uses strong AES-256 bit encryption by default. Weaker encryption isn't even an option
• Global VPN network: With servers in 22+ countries and lightning-fast speeds, access the websites and apps you love. Anytime, anywhere
• Helpful support that always responds within 24 hours

Don’t do half measures with a VPN

Like many other reviewers, I did a lot of research before choosing my vpn. Where it’s based is a big issue and the hardcore VPNers will mark tunnel bear down for being within the 5 eyes security community as its based in Canada. But for me being based in Canada vice Bulgaria or Romania is actually a plus point. I’m not getting my vpn to take on GCHQ or the NSA, I just want to protect myself from generalised criminality / hacking and have the option to use public Wi-fi without too much worry. Tunnel bear therefore ticks almost all the boxes. Despite some reviewers comments - having used it for over a year on multiple family member subscriptions - it’s reliable and if an update does make it go wobbly then the developers are on it quickly. If you want something simple, reliable, safe and well maintained then tunnel bear is a good choice.

Continuously disconnects

Works better on iPhone but is a right pain on iPad. Continuously disconnects and then get “The VPN sever did not respond”, time and time again. Tried TunnelBear recommendations but no joy. Their online support pages are next to useless. I’m seriously thinking that the subscription was a big waste of money. I am typing this without the VPN connected via my ISP connection as it still won’t connect.

Update: The service seems to have significantly improved since I wrote the initial review so boost from 1 to 4 stars and see how it goes!!

8-Jun-19, back to two stars. The improvement didn’t last long. Extensive exchanges with tech support helped a little but still drops out from time to time and then takes ages to reconnect. Just happened now, dropped out for around 2 minutes, that’s why I am updating this review.

9-Jun-19, now down to one star! Have been trying to connect through TunnelBear for over 5 minutes! Connect on demand set but the TunnelBear app just keeps flipping quickly between Connecting... and Disconnected, however I am connected to the internet via my ISP so no VPN protection. Totally unreliable and a big waste of money!

10-Aug-19, Worse than ever!! Since this latest update it is dropping out time after time after time. I have had cases where the app shows ‘connected’ even after closing and reopening but there wasn’t a VPN: to check an IP lookup showed the ISP IP! That is just the worst of the issues.

6-35% drop in Wi-Fi and 4G speed using TunnelBear

Been using TunnelBear VPN for a month now, on my iPad 10.5 and iPhone 7 Plus, I find the drop in D/L speed Mbps is around 6% on home BT wifi(35Mbps down to 33Mbps), and on EE 4G it’s 35% slower(37Mbps down to 24Mbps). These can vary tho but I’ve done a handful of tests before writing this to get an average. For every day use it’s not really noticeable the drop in speed pages load up at so I’m happy.
The losing a star is for 2 things.
First, Netflix will throw up an error and refuse to stream with TunnelBear VPN on, you have to switch it off. No getting around it, Netflix refuses to work.
Second issue is using google, it will ask you to verify by clicking on the squares in a picture showing a car/signpost etc to verify your not a robot, very annoying and time consuming process.
Common to all VPN’s? I don’t know....
Also to add that if you try the free version despite the promise of 1gb free data if u tweet them, they don’t respond. You have to go into ur online account to message them as whoever handles their twitter account has yet to respond to any of my tweets for free data like they promise. Annoying rather than deal breaking.
