Description

Viewfinder Preview is an iPhone app for previewing camera framing for any combination of camera and lens. Instead of spending all that time setting up your big camera, just choose your desired film/sensor size and focal length in the app and point the iPhone camera at what you want to photo to verify framing. If you are happy with the framing then you can get the big camera out. The app has a large database of camera sensors details and film formats but if the format you desire isn’t there you can add your own custom format. The app is targeted at stills photographers or film makers working in either film or digital. If you don’t have your big camera with you, Viewfinder Preview is still great for photo sketching, location scouting or story boarding.

The app includes

- Customisable menus so you can include the film/sensor formats and focal lengths you care about.
- A fully configurable light meter.
- You can take photos with it, so you have a record of shots you were framing.
- Photos taken with the app include additional data that describe the film format, focal length and lighting meter settings at the time the shot was taken
- Add notes to your photos
- A photo gallery for viewing photos taken with the app which also displays the additional data
- Share images in emails, messages
- Create albums of photos from the same project, trip etc
- Create PDF documents of albums
- Film stock emulation
- Wide angle lens adapter support

Excellent!

As a large format landscape photographer using 5x4 and 10x8 I found this app to be one of the most useful tools to have in the field. The ability to frame the picture before setting up the camera is the main purpose but the app has so much more to offer. The note keeping journal which stores both exposure details and an image is great as a record and these can be saved in albums of a particular day or project. Also to see the image in monochrome before exposing a frame gives me a good idea of what the print will end up looking like. I’ve bought a few ‘photographers toolkit’ types of apps which end up falling short of the mark but this one is a keeper! Congratulations to the developer for an excellent app.

Invaluable Tool!

I've used Viewfinder for a few years now, mainly with pinhole cameras. This app is perfect for framing and exposure calculation, you can even factor in filter compensations. My only suggestion for improvement would be the ability to set up and save a number of camera 'profiles', whereby the settings such as aperture, aspect ratio, frame size, iso etc can be saved to a dedicated slot? Extremely useful when switching from one camera to another. I'd love to see this feature in future updates. Thanks

Having read the featured photographer ‘Adam Fowler’ in On Landscape I decided to purchase this app. I just can’t get it to work it always defaults to full frame and as Fuji user I have both APS C and MF format cameras. Very frustrating so it’s back to a cardboard mask for me.

Since my initial review I would add the following.

I could see the benefits of this app as I carry my kit in a backpack so I decided to persevere. I accept that I’m not a ‘techy’ person but after working through the help section I have now got the app to work. To his credit the developer contacted me and offered help but by this time I had managed to configure the app to my cameras and lenses. The app works fine and I’m sure it will be beneficial to me.
