Description

Please note that this App currently works in England, Scotland and Wales

ViewScanner lets you quickly and easily identify what's around you when you are out and about in the country. No Internet connection is needed. Just point, click and scan. An invaluable tool for hill walkers, ramblers or just anyone interested in what they can see in the distance.

The App will highlight the names and details of over 300,000 Ordnance Survey locations across England, Scotland and Wales (please note that Northern Ireland is NOT covered by the App currently).

The App overlays the points onto a photo of what you can see, allowing you to easily identify hills, mountains, lakes, lochs, towns, villages, even schools, ports, waterfalls and forests. You no longer have to think 'what's that hill or town in the distance', just point, click and we'll let you know. You can filter the points of interest to the type of feature you are interested in, such as hills or forests.

You can also select from a list of visible points and ask the App to show them to you. All images can be saved and recalled later, along with the details of all the locations that are visible. If you have an internet connection you can open a map view of any highlighted point.

Easy to use

You do have to take a photo and then align the horizon, but that is easy to do. I like the fact that you get told about villages and other things as well as hills.

Super

Great app, can see it being very useful. When it boots up, and the dialogue box says “updating location”, is that using internet or GPS?

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the feedback. When the app says ‘getting location’ it is using GPS only and does not require internet access. The only times the app needs internet access is the very first time it downloads its data file (the first time you use it) and also if you select the ‘view on map’ option that is usually in the bottom right of the screen. This is because that particular option needs Apple/Google maps to work. The map icon won’t appear if an internet connection isn’t available. Hope that helps. Kind regards. The ViewScanner team
