Horrendous technical support

I’ve used the app twice to buy tickets and both times have had to repurchase the tickets from another vendor after I was unable to access my e-ticket due to various technical difficulties.

The e-ticket function, unlike all other ticketing apps I have used, inexplicably links the ticket to one device with no way of accessing it if something should happen to your phone or you have problem downloading it such as poor signal. On my second attempt I bought a ticket only to find out that for some technical reason it wasn’t available to download to my account. The card transaction went through but I had no booking reference, email confirmation, receipt or any document that I could have taken to the ticket office to try and explain my situation. I called LNER customer service only to find out that the office doesn’t open on weekends; my train left that afternoon. There is no way to access your tickets via a desktop account or by logging on from another device, no customer support online and no call centre on weekends. It’s a terrible technical experience backed up by zero customer support. To this day I’ve never received a response to my frantic emails about how to recover tickets.

I have been using the East Coast Mainline for 25 years and would consider myself tech savvy.
I saw the option to get the ticket on my mobile like other TOCs offer. The link on the DESKTOP site to download the app takes you to a description on the MOBILE app. Not thwarted by that I went to the App Store to download it. Within the desktop site, where I was buying my ticket there was an option to initiate the app on my phone. I logged in on my phone. Then pressed the button to initiate the app. Several clicks and several blank screens later I gave up.
However, with so much as a push notification from the app my tickets appeared 20 minutes later!
At the top of the ticket there was a message saying ‘ACTIVATE TO USE’. There were no instructions in the app nor on the Virgin site that we obvious about how to activate the ticket.
After a few hours of searching I found an article that informed me that I would get a push notification 20 minutes before departure and that I had to activate the ticket between then and the departure time or face having to buy another ticket.
I think I’ll stick to the much easier and less time consuming collection method of getting at the station. At least that way I’ll know I have a valid ticket and won’t be charged again!

One star is much too generous

How, literally HOW in this day and age of technology can lner have an app that is not only totally unusable but also seems to have been totally unusable for the past three years. Is it expecting too much to assume that the app would recognise my (accurate) email address, like it did last week? And when I try and log in, I am told I have no internet. Amazing that the rest of my phone functions as if I do! I am actually quite impressed by HOW badly made it is, so I guess one star for that.
On a side note, how HILARIOUS is it also that despite the number of complaints about the app even here, the two numbers you are given for customer service help when you fail to find your tickets (bought over a month ago) where they are meant to be are INACTIVE. Inactive! Really, well done lner, it’s a feat to be this useless
