Description

Voice Memo allows you to record a message that you can send to yourself in the future using a built in alarm calendar. This is a very precise way of telling yourself in detail, what you want yourself to be doing at a specific time. Remind yourself of an important event or task using the tone of your voice to convey a stronger message. Voice messages are very effective and precise since they convey a stronger sense of urgency compared to an email.

Frustrating

This is a handy app, but there are a couple of issues with it that makes it almost unusable if you end up handling a high volume of recordings:
• While you can rename the files in-app, it doesn’t reflect in Finder; the files are just named with the dates.
• This issue is compounded by the fact that you can’t search within the app for older recordings.
• And that the voice recordings end up randomly ordered, so you’re left scrolling through possibly hundreds of recordings, hoping your eye is drawn to the correct name.
– This could be fixed by having the name you save the recording with reflected in the actual file in Finder.

Other useful features would be:
• Search function
• Ability to navigate backwards and forwards through the file. Currently you can only play/pause the recording.
• Ability to minimise and restore the window without the app freezing (I’ve lost recordings a couple of times forgetting about this bug).
• Ability to expand the window size horizontally. I have to open them in Quicktime in order to be able to do this. When you’re transcribing from a recording and miss a few words, you need to be able to make fine adjustments when you’re navigating on the progress bar – so you need to be able to make it as wide as possible.
• An easy way to delete an alarm on a recording. It seems to randomly allocate alarms even when you don’t want them, so every time you open it you have to click away overdue alarms you weren’t expecting to see. When you need to hit record quickly, this is frustrating.

I do like the app. It’s small and compact, doesn’t look ugly, launches quickly. It’s just that there are some real usability frustrations.
