Why is there a UK phonics screening check?
The phonics screening check is an assessment to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard.
This test is undertaken in all UK state schools in Year 1 and for children in year 2 who did not meet the year 1 standard.
The phonics screening check is a short and simple assessment of phonic decoding. It consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half alien (non-words), which children read.
Alien words (made up words) are included because they will be new to all children, so there won’t be a bias to those with a good vocabulary knowledge or visual memory of words. Children who can read non-words should have the skills to decode almost any unfamiliar word. The pass mark has remained the same over the past years: 32 words out of 40 (80%).

Ratings and Reviews
An excellent app I can use in lessons
Not as pretty as other Phonics apps I have come across however this is an excellent app for practising pseudo / alien words. Children in my class love Zat Phonics, especially a few reluctant readers who at this stage prefer to use the interactivity of an iPad rather than read from a book. The children can also listen to the sounds as many times as they want. The sound files are very good quality, very clear and distinguishable.
Potentially Zat Phonics could be used at home by parents who are not familiar with the sounds in Phonics as the sound files are included.
Now my class has Obb and Bob and Zat Phonics as firm favourites in Phonics lessons. Very highly recommended, thank you Zat Phonics!
As a Teacher of a Year One Class I believe Zat phonics offers a practical opportunity to practise blending real and pseudo words in preparation for the phonics screening test. The playback option delivers a clear example of how each word should be sound talked and blended which provides a unique experience given the dearth of playback options offered by other phonics apps.
This is certainly worth a go and is an app which will supplement a rich phonics curriculum to support children's learning in Reading.
I have used this app with both of my children (4 and 5) and have noticed an improvement in both of their blending of sounds. They have applied this to their reading and have moved up two reading book levels. Fantastic app that I will recommend to family and friends!
