Gymaholic isn’t like other bodybuilding or fitness apps. Yes, it works on iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. Sure, it tracks your workouts and your progress and enables you to customise pretty much everything.

But how many other workout apps enable you to see yourself as a 3D man or woman floating around your front room? Exactly.

Gymaholic adds 3D graphics and augmented reality (AR) to the usual activity mix. You can input your measurements to create a 3D avatar of your own body and using your iPad or iPhone camera you can then see that avatar in your real environment to critique or admire it. Or if you’re easily amused like us, you can shrink it down to a tiny size on the table and shout “look at the little man!”

Work those pectorals, but don’t forget leg day.

The 3D graphics also do something very useful: they show you how to do your exercises properly. From lifts to lunges, you can see exactly how you’re supposed to do each exercise to get the results you want without popping something important. Post-workout the avatar can show you exactly what muscles you’ve trained so you know what’s going to hurt tomorrow.

Although the app is focused on bodybuilding it works for all kinds of workouts: HIIT, weightlifting and cardio workouts are all well covered too. It’s a really interesting use of augmented reality technology as well as a useful workout tracker.
