OUR FAVOURITES

Apps and games we love this month

Check out August’s top new releases.

August was another great month for apps and games on the App Store – here are six of our favourites.

Pokémon Masters

In a unique twist on the critter-catching classic, you’ll need to pick a team of trainers, as well as their Pokémon, to truly triumph in these tough three-on-three tournaments.

It’s an excellent excuse to catch up with your favourite characters from the franchise (remember Brock and Misty?) as you mix and match Gym Leaders to buff out your squad.

The Athletic: Sports Coverage

If you love football, The Athletic is your hub for news, podcasts and features on the beautiful game.

First up, choose your team: that could be the team you love or the team you love to hate (but can’t stop reading about); next choose your favourite leagues and dive in. Listen to podcasts, follow your favourite writers and check your team’s scores, all in one place.

Telling Lies

Something terrible has happened, and someone is covering it up. So who can you trust?

From the creator of the sensational Her Story comes another immersive live-action thriller, as you rifle through data archives – files, video clips, and recorded interviews – in a gripping search for the truth.

Human Heroes Curie On Matter

Great educational apps bring their subject matter to life in inventive ways. This one introduces iconic physicist Marie Curie on stage to a roaring crowd as “the woman who put the rad into radiation.”

Tap around the scene to learn more about Curie’s work, her life story and also to play science-themed mini-games. Voice acted with gusto by actor Miriam Margoyles, the app’s bound to encourage the budding scientist in your life.

SNIKS

There’s cute and whimsical, and then there’s this: to solve these breezy puzzles, you’ll need to steer these adorable little worm folks around the board in just the right way to ensure that each of their colours matches the food they’re eating.

We’re especially fond of the sound effects, in particular the cheery “schlomp!” of a snake hoovering up a blueberry.

Ellie: Meet Disabled Singles

This brilliant app will let you find other singles with disabilities. Anyone familiar with dating apps will quickly understand the swipes - left to dismiss and right to save a match. Set your age, who you are interested in meeting and the disability that affects you, and make sure you take advantage of the included chat function that’s perfect to break the ice.
